District 205 School Board and Teachers Union Reach Tentative Contract Agreement

Contract must be ratified by the union and formally adopted by the School Board before details are released.

the Elmhurst Teachers’ Council and the Elmhurst Unit District 205 Board have reached a tentative agreement on a new contract, according to a press release from the School District.  

Details of the agreement will not be released until the teachers union ratifies it and the School Board formally adopts it.

District 205 Board representatives and the Elmhurst Teachers Council began contract negotiations last September. At that time, both teams participated in interest-based bargaining training, a collaborative process that allows both teams to gain a full understanding of each others' interests and concerns.

A factor in negotiations this year likely was the passage of Illinois . The law makes it harder for teachers to go on strike, and it eliminates a longstanding teacher seniority policy, which historically has required the most recently hired teachers to be the first laid off when cuts are made.

The law also will make it easier for school districts to fire inadequate teachers and it will make it more difficult for teachers to go on strike.

School began on time Aug. 18, despite the fact teachers were operating under a contract that had expired on June 30.

The Elmhurst Teachers’ Council is comprised of 626 certified staff members.
