President Barack Obama confirmed Sunday that the No. 1 enemy of the United States, Osama bin Laden, was killed during a U.S. operation in Pakistan. DNA tests have confirmed his identity.

The leader of al-Qaida, who masterminded the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks that killed more than 3,000 people, has been hiding since the attacks.

In his announcement to the nation, Obama said that the U.S. received a possible lead months ago as to bin Laden's whereabouts in Pakistan.

“Finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action," Obama said.

The president said that no Americans were harmed in the operation.

"A small team of Americans carried out the operation with extraordinary courage and capability. No Americans were harmed," he said. "They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, they killed Osama bin Laden and took custody of his body."

His capture was just about the only thing talked about on Facebook and Twitter Sunday night.
