Look for St. Charles Road to be Torn Up this Summer

Increase in traffic near new hospital also will require some reconfiguration on Butterfield Road.

Elmhurst Public Works and Building Committee Monday approved a $458,000 contract for road work on St. Charles Road between York Road and York High School.

Improvements include grinding down 3 inches of concrete pavement and replacing it with asphalt, along with related curb, gutter and sewer work and the restoration of parkways.

Seven companies bid for the work, and Lemont-based K-Five Construction submitted the low bid. K-Five has completed satisfactory work for the city in the past and also is working on the Vallette Street pavement improvements. The contract requires the work to be completed by mid-August, before the 2011-12 school year begins.

The city was awarded a $380,000 federal grant for the work. The remaining $78,000 would come from various city roadwork funds. The contract now goes to the City Council for final approval.

The committee also was updated on engineering plans for work at the intersection of Butterfield Road and Commonwealth Drive, which will get an upgrade because of a projected increase in traffic after the new Elmhurst Memorial Hospital opens at York and Roosevelt roads.

Director of Public Works Mike Hughes told the committee that the llinois Department of Transportation wants to move a driveway from the Butterfield Exchange office building closer to the Astoria Place townhomes to make for smoother left turns on Commonwealth.

The city plans to fund some of this $1.2 million project with a $700,000 federal grant, and has applied for another grant to cover some of the remaining cost.
