Congressman Quigley Delivers 'Meals On Wheels' With A Smile

Congressman Mike Quigley (IL-5) swings through Elmhurst to highlight the importance of the "meals on wheels" program to DuPage seniors.

Congressman Mike Quigley (IL-5th) swung through Elmhurst on Monday morning delivering freshly prepared meals to homebound seniors who are unable to shop or cook for themselves.

The congressman joined the DuPage Senior Citizens Council to get a better perspective on grass-roots programs for the elderly.

DuPage Senior Citizens Council volunteers help package and deliver the freshly prepared meals each weekday. The three-part Meals on Wheels program ensures that in addition to a warm smile, seniors receive a nutritious meal, a well being check and an emergency follow up, if necessary.

Volunteers help package and deliver freshly prepared meals each weekday to homebound seniors who are unable to shop or cook for themselves. The three-part Meals on Wheels program ensures that, in addition to a warm smile, seniors will receive a nutritious meal, a well-being check, and emergency follow-up, if needed. This thorough program provides an imperative human connection, too often lost when seniors live alone.

The "human connections" helps keep homebound seniors connected to the community so that they don't feel isolated and alone.

"Not only did it give me a better perspective on the importance of the Meals on Wheels program to many elderly residents in DuPage County," Quigley said, "but it also reminded me why we should support volunteer organizations like Meals on Wheels that dedicate their time for the well-being of others."

DSCC serves all DuPage seniors distributes meals from Addison, Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights, Lombard, Naperville, Westmont and Wheaton.

It costs DSCC over $8.00 to deliver and serve a single meal to a senior. Major funding sources cover approximately $4 per meal. DSCC must raise the additional money to cover the costs of the meals. Seniors are asked to donate as much as they feel they can afford to help reduce the cost gap.

If you, a family member, neighbor or friend are need of home-delivered "meals on wheels," or if interested in volunteering, call DSCC at 630-620-0804.
