Are You Still Using Your Old Garbage Cans?

If so, you'll be passed over for pickup next week.

Residents still using 33-gallon garbage cans instead of the new 65-gallon toters provided by Allied Waste this spring soon will find their garbage remaining at the curb after trash pickup, City Manager Jim Grabowski told Elmhurst City Council July 15.

"(Public Works) Director Mike Hughes has been talking to the folks at Allied, and in the next two weeks, they will become more strict in enforcing the new-receptacle collection."

That means next week's trash, for pickup July 31-Aug. 2, must be in the new receptacles.

"Up until now, they've been emptying basically any can residents are putting out there," Grabowski said.

The city's new contract with Allied allows residents to use only 65-gallon or 95-gallon toters, as well as a 65-gallon recycling toter, in order to provide for a more efficient pickup process and to reduce on-the-job injuries. The toters are hoisted by lifts on trucks. The new program did not increase the cost for residents who formerly used 33-gallon cans.

Grabowski said Allied was planning to put stickers on cans this week to remind people about the enforcement.

Residents who have not received a new toter should call (708) 498-5292.
