Woman Sends $4,000 to a Man She Met Online, and More From the Elmhurst Police Blotter

Also, kid takes off with crossing guard's stop sign while guard steps away to help motorist.

Deceptive Practice

A resident of the 100 block of Birch Tree Court met a man through an online dating website and, over a period of time, he convinced her to send him $4,000 via Western Union. After she sent the money, the suspect made less and less contact with her. She then received a call from a Wisconsin police detective who said someone had all of her personal information. Police are attempting to contact the suspect. The police report was filed at 3:23 p.m. Oct. 30.

Theft Arrests

Marissa N. Vazquez, 18, 405 N. Elmwood Ave., Wood Dale, and Katie L. Rubright, 18, 123 N. Oak, Wood Dale, were arrested and charged with retail theft after they allegedly took several items of clothing from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 26. They were released on bond.

Ladonna Williams, 49, 1308 Wingfield Way, Bolingbrook, was arrested and charged with retail theft after she allegedly was seen on video placing three bottles of liquor and a container of chicken salad into her cart at Dominick's, 215 S. Route 83, and leaving without paying at 6:37 p.m. Oct. 16. She was stopped in the parking lot.

Wayne Phillips, 51, 5217 St. Charles Road, Berkeley, and Penny Oliver, 39, 3943 W. Monroe, Chicago, were arrested for shoplifting after they allegedly took three bottles of alcohol from Dominick's, 215 S. Route 83, at 9:43 p.m. Oct. 27. They had foil lining their purse and jacket pockets to keep theft detection sensors from triggering the alarm. Phillips was charged with felony retail theft and possession of a theft detection shielding device. He was taken to DuPage County Jail. Oliver was charged with retail theft and possession of a theft detection shielding device and released on I-bond.

Theft

A youth currently on station adjustment for a prior offense allegedly stole a stop sign from a school crossing guard at Church and Prospect at 3:50 p.m. Oct. 26. The crossing guard told police that while he was tending to a woman whose car had broken down at the intersection, the boy stole the sign and ran through Wilder Park with it. The crossing guard was only interested in getting the sign back. The boy and his mother returned the sign to the police station.

An employee of Power Mart, 572 W. Lake St., stepped into the rear office to turn off the lights prior to closing at 8:30 p.m. Oct. 21 when two suspects stole cigarettes from behind the counter. The suspects, who were seen on security camera, were described as older teens.

A black AT&T iPhone 4 was taken from a desktop at the Lincoln School Halloween Carnival, 565 S. Fairfield, between 9:02 and 9:26 p.m. Oct. 26. Loss is estimated at $100.

Four catalytic converters were removed from four Comcast trucks parked at Comcast, 155 Industrial Drive, between 3 p.m. Oct. 25 and and 7:30 p.m. Oct. 28.

A brown Louis Vuitton purse was removed from a home on the 900 block of South Mitchell during a party between 6:20 and 7:45 p.m. Oct. 27. The victim's cell phone and her husband's wallet were found in the front yard the next day. Taken was $120, two pairs of sunglasses, an Illinois drivers license and credit cards. Loss is estimated at $3,770.

Someone stole a package from the front of a home on the 400 block of South Fairview after 4:53 p.m. Oct. 10. The UPS package contained a black nylon pistol belt.

Someone fraudulently used an American Express Corporate credit card belonging to a business on the 500 block of West Lake Street to charge about $10,000 in four transactions between Oct. 15 and 31.

At least 39 pieces of 50-foot copper cable was taken from an unlocked storage trailer on the east side of Patten Caterpillar, 615 W. Lake St., between 5:30 p.m. Oct. 16 and 10 a.m. Oct. 30. An additional 45 pieces were taken from outside the storage trailer. Total loss is $30,000.

A black and chrome Raleigh MXR 20-inch boys bike was stolen from the bike rack in front of Emerson School, 400 N. West Ave., between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Oct. 31. The lock was still locked to the rack.

Two male Hispanics in their mid-30s driving a maroon Dodge Caravan were seen on security video stealing a 1993 black Ford Bronco from Lucky Motors, 817 N. Church Road, at about 10 p.m. Oct. 28. The vehicle has a 7-foot Western plow on the front. One of the suspects has a scratch on the left side of his face.

Attempted Commercial Burglary

Pry marks were found on the rear door to Dulles Cleaners, 128 N. Addison, at 8 p.m. Oct. 29. No entry was gained.
