Woman Reportedly Shot at Route 83 and Butterfield

Police said she was shot by her ex-husband.

A man was still at large as of 4 p.m. today, July 5, after he reportedly shot his ex-wife at around 3 p.m. near the intersection of Butterfield Road and Route 83.

Calls began flooding into police dispatch about shots fired a few minutes after 3 p.m. Witnesses said a man in a Silver or Gray Chevy Trailblazer fired shots at a woman in traffic. According to information coming across the Elmhurst Police radio, it is believed the incident may have started at Lexington Health Care.

After the shooting, witnesses said they saw a man and woman running from the scene eastbound on Butterfield Road. A man in a blue pickup truck reportedly picked up the woman who had been shot and drove her to the Elmhurst Police Station.

The extent of her injuries is unclear, but she was able to tell police it was her ex-husband who shot her. 

Police are searching for Ron Smith, who is believed to be from Carol Stream. He was last seen driving a silver Chevy Trailblazer westbound on Roosevelt Road.

The man who was running with the woman still has not been located, although police believe that man may have been the suspect chasing the victim before he fled in his vehicle. K-9 dogs from Oakbrook Terrace aided in the search.

Police blocked a portion of Butterfield Road to secure the area as they searched for evidence. Shell casings were found, and DuPage evidence technicians were dispatched to the scene.
