Video Shows CTA Train Plow into O'Hare Station, a Sleeping Driver at the Controls

CTA driver admits she fell asleep — and she's fallen asleep at the controls in the past.

A security camera video posted on YouTube shows the moment a CTA train plowed into the station at O'Hare International Airport early Monday morning.

The train jumped the platform and climbed up the escalator before coming to a halt.

The driver of the train has admitted she dozed off while at the controls, reports the Chicago Tribune on Wednesday. And she's fallen asleep at the controls in the past, according to the National Transportation and Safety Board. Last month, she was reprimanded after sleeping through a station stop.

"She did admit that she dozed off prior to entering the station, and she did not awake again until the train hit close to the end of the bumper," said Ted Turpin, NTSB's lead investigator.

"This time, she woke up when she hit."

Turpin said damage from the crash is estimated at $6 million.
