Top of the Blotter: Ripped Off Rental Car and Suspicious Cookie Delivery

Suspicious Person

Police got a call for a suspicious person in the area of Fair and South streets at 3:48 a.m. Dec. 21. When leaving the area, police saw two individuals running through back yards. A perimeter was set up, but the suspects were not found.

Police were called to the 400 block of Huntington around 12:30 p.m. on Dec. 23 on a report of a man who tried to open two doors to a house while a female resident was inside. She locked herself in an upstairs bathroom and called police. Two bags of Christmas cookies were found near the front door and taken into evidence. Police also spoke to neighbors.

Theft

A gray Chrysler 300 was reportedly stolen from Ace Rent A Car, 890 N. York Road, at 4:41 p.m. Dec. 5. The manager said the vehicle was rented to a woman who put down a deposit of $566.18 with a Discover card on Dec. 5. On Dec. 12, an employee tried to contact her because she was delinquent in returning the vehicle. On Dec. 17, he reported the vehicle stolen. Officers determined the drivers license and credit card used to rent the vehicle were fraudulent.

A phone worth $200 was stolen at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, between 4 and 4:30 p.m. Dec. 18.

A locked bicycle worth $100 was reported stolen from a bike rack at the train station, 128 W. First St., at 8:19 p.m. Dec. 18.

A locked, green Wildwood mountain bike worth $200 was reported stolen from a bike rack at the train station, 128 W. First St., at 9:02 p.m. Dec. 18.

A resident of the 700 block of Alexander Boulevard told police she was missing several pieces of jewelry worth nearly $6,000 from her home. She said it was taken between Dec. 7 and 19. She and her husband have a house guest that does home projects for them from time to time; police spoke to the subject, who denied taking the jewelry. There was no external sign of burglary to the home.

A black purse containing credit cards, $10, a drivers license and makeup was stolen from a bathroom at the victim's office between 10:15 and 11 a.m. Dec. 20. Someone later used the card at Exxon Mobil in Elmhurst.

A man reportedly placed five bottles of Ciroc vodka into a shopping cart at Dominick's, 215 S. Route 83, then left the store without paying at 4:30 p.m. Dec. 20. He was described as Hispanic or mixed-race, in his mid-30s, about 6 feet, 2 inches tall, 190 pounds and wearing jeans, a black T-shirt, black leather coat, black shoes with white trim and a red baseball cap.

Someone used the Chase debit card of a resident to withdraw $500 from her account at a Chase branch in Niles at 6:55 p.m. Dec. 21.

Someone used the Chase debit card of a resident of the 900 block of South Saylor to make several unauthorized withdrawals totaling $1,000 on Dec. 22.

Two ladders worth $500 were removed from a home under construction on the 800 block of Chatham between 3:45 p.m. Dec. 21 and 7 a.m. Dec. 22.

The owner of a home in the 500 block of Willow reported on Dec. 22 that window blinds, a washer and a dryer were missing from the residence he rented out. The renter claimed she had purchased the items because the home did not work. Police referred both people to civil court.

Police were called on Dec. 24 by a resident who reported someone used his Chase bank account to withdraw $500 in Skokie.
