Thief Makes Off With $7,000 Doughnut Box, and It Doesn't Cost $4,125 to Win the Mega Millions

Fraud

A resident of the 300 block of East North Avenue told police he got a call from someone stating he won the Mega Millions $2.5 million sweepstakes. The caller told the victim to wire $125 to pay for the processing fee. The victim wired the money, then was contacted again by the caller stating he needed to wire another $4,000. After a number of phone calls between April 13 and 28, the victim became suspicious and notified police.

Retail Theft Arrests

A 16-year-old girl was arrested and charged with retail theft after she took $90 worth of cosmetics from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83 and left the store without paying at 6:33 p.m. April 25. Her aunt was in the store with her and was unaware of the situation. The girl was released on bond.

Anayeli Granados, 25, 4908 Parker, Chicago, was arrested and charged with retail theft at 3:44 p.m. April 26 after a security officer at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, saw her enter a dressing room with her two small children and $84.62 worth of children's clothing, place the items into a bag hanging from the stroller and exit the store without paying. She was released on I-bond.

Identity Theft

A resident of the 300 block of Hill Street told police someone used her Social Security number and other personal information to file a federal tax return. Residents on the 100 block of East Wilson, the 700 block of North Kenilworth and the 700 block of South Fairfield reported their identity also was used to file fraudulent tax returns in recent days.

Someone used the American Express credit card of a victim to purchase $208.40 in airline tickets. The report was made at 3:09 p.m. April 16.

A resident of the 500 block of Fay reported someone made an online charge to his Chase Bank account in the amount of $299.99 to an electronics store in California.

A resident of the 500 block of North West Avenue told police someone made an online purchase at Walmart in Texas using his account information. Two separate charges, for $9.64 and $276.63, were recorded.

Theft

The owner of a Dunkin Donuts shop placed a doughnut box containing $7,000 on his front passenger seat on April 30. He started driving and discovered he had a flat tire on the 200 block of North Oaklawn Avenue at about 11:35 a.m. He walked to the corner to verify the street name and heard a pop sound. When he looked back toward his vehicle, he saw a man about 25 years old running away from the vehicle. The window had been smashed and the money was gone.

A resident of the 500 block of Howard told police someone stole his locked vehicle from his driveway between 11 p.m. April 12 and 4 a.m. April 13. The vehicle had tinted windows, a lowered suspension and an after-market muffler and exhaust system, and it contained numerous items worth about $820, police said.

Someone stole an unlocked yellow Haro BMX bike worth $400 from the 100 block of North York Street at 9:15 p.m. April 14.

Someone took a $500 T-Mobile Sensation cell phone from the commons area of York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, at 1:30 p.m. April 19.

Someone stole a tan and brown purse containing a debit card, drivers license and $20 from Starbucks, 164 N. York Road, at 10 a.m. April 22.

Two semi tractors were stolen from the rear of Elmhurst Suzuki, 334 W. Grand Ave., between 6 p.m. April 20 and 12:20 p.m. April 22.

Someone attempted to steal a large Harley power rake worth $6,000 that belongs to CE Rentals, 1021 S. Route 83 in Elmhurst, between 10 a.m. April 22 and 7:08 a.m. April 23. A resident on the 100 block of Chandler Street had rented the equipment to re-construct his lawn, and he left it on the front lawn of his neighbor's house April 22. The next morning, it was found flipped over, dismantled and laying by the curb. It is believed someone tried to steal it by taking it apart but was unsuccessful. Damage is estimated at $100.

Someone took a silver Apple iPhone 3G worth $300 and a silver case from a locked physical education locker at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, between 4:30 and 5 p.m. April 18.

A representative of Elmhurst Coins and Collectibles, 127 N. Addison, purchased for $16,000 what he thought was an 1893 silver coin from a suspect police have not yet named. The coin dealer sent the coin to be validated and discovered it was not authentic. Police are following up.

Someone stole a black Samsung Galaxy S cell phone from a desk at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, between 9:40 and 10:40 a.m. April 16.

An iPod was stolen from Subway, 113 E. Schiller St., at 1 p.m. April 23. The victim told police when he went to the restroom, his $300 iPod fell out of his pocket onto the floor and he placed it on the toilet paper dispenser, then forgot about it. He purchased his food and left the store, then immediately remembered his iPod and went to the restroom to get it, but the man in the bathroom stall denied finding the iPod. The device was tracked to Belvidere.

Someone made two fraudulent purchases at Pauli's Marathon, 260 N. York Road, back in March. The service station discovered the theft after receiving a mail report receipt from Marathon's credit card processing company in April. The first fraudulent purchase was 21 packs of Newport cigarettes for $158.20 on March 9. The second was for 21 more packs of cigarettes for $166.80 and $50 in gas on March 11. The employee working that day thought the purchases were suspicious and wrote down the suspects vehicle information. An investigation is pending.
