Theft of Cash, Phone, Lawnmower, Tools and More Reported by Elmhurst Police

Thefts reported Oct. 2-16.

An black, unlocked BMX bike with a checkered seat and white and blue frame pegs was stolen from the bike rack at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 314 Vallette, between 5 and 9 p.m. Oct. 2.

A Samsung cell phone was taken from an unlocked locker in the girls locker room at York, 355 W. St. Charles Road, between 7:45 and 8:35 a.m. Oct. 2. The victim tracked the phone to a girl who said she found it in the hallway by the child development classes and put it in her backpack.

Someone took seven pet training remote devices totaling $1,059.93 from Petco, 199 S. Route 83, between Oct. 2 and 4 p.m. Oct. 5. They had been in a locked glass cabinet.

A resident of the 900 block of Spring Road reported at 2:35 p.m. Oct. 7 that he left his wedding ring at Landers Hotel in Utica. It was found by the hotel staff and mailed back to him, but when he got it, the envelope was torn open and the ring was gone. The ring is platinum and worth $1,800.

Someone took a $350 gray and red Honda lawnmower from the front yard of a home on the 400 block of North Maple between 3:35 and 3:40 p.m. Oct. 7 while the owner went into the back yard to get a yard waste bag.

Numerous tools worth about $1,060 were taken from a vehicle parked facing the east wall of Extended Stay America, 500 West Grand Avenue, between 2 and 6 a.m. Oct. 10. The driver-side vent window was broken.

A black leather Samsonite briefcase was stolen from a vehicle parked behind Courts Plus, 186 S. West Ave., between 8 and 9:10 a.m. Oct. 11. The case contained 10 credit/debit cards and miscellaneous documents. The thief smashed the rear passenger side window to gain access to the vehicle.

Hand tools worth more than $885 were taken from vehicle parked at Kranz Inc., 582 Michigan St., between 9 a.m. Oct. 8 and 12:42 p.m. Oct. 11.

A resident of the 100 block of North Geneva reported that $403 was withdrawn on his debit card at a Northlake location between Sept. 27 and 28. The report was filed at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 11.

A resident of the 1000 block of Swain Drive told police at 3 p.m. Oct. 12 that she hired a friend of the family to put up new siding on her home. When the siding was complete, the suspect went inside to install a screen on a window. The victim left him unattended for a few moments. A week later, she said she noticed one of her checks had been cashed in the amount of $4,250 and that two more checks were missing. Police are investigating.

A wallet was reported stolen at 3:12 p.m. Oct. 12. The victim said a charge already had been made on one of the credit cards in the wallet at Target in Schaumburg in the amount of $871.81. A second attempt for $800 was made. The victim said she was having lunch that afternoon at Panera, 108 W. North Ave., when she was bumped by a female near the drink station. She believes this is when her wallet was taken.

While playing in a football game, a student at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, placed his belongings in an unlocked locker between 6:45 and 10:55 p.m. Oct. 12. When he went back to get them, his iPhone, headphones and dog tags were missing. Another victim's phone was taken and later located using GPS tracking. Police said the suspect threw the first victim's phone into a lake to avoid being caught with it. The offender was released to his mother after being referred to juvenile probation.

A woman told police she saw two men break into her vehicle, which was parked at 633 W. North Ave. at 4:03 p.m. Oct. 15, and remove her purse, which contained many credit cards and $2,800 in cash. A police dog tried to track the suspects, but they got away.

A resident of the 700 block of South Stuart told police she received a call from a suspect who said her son-in-law had been arrested and needed bond money. The victim sent the money via Money Gram to an unknown subject in Mexico on Oct. 16.

A resident of the 800 block of Mitchell reported several unauthorized charges totaling $391.37 from her bank account. All of the charges were made in Newark, Del. The report was made Oct. 15.

Three full prescription bottles were taken from a vehicle parked on the 300 block of River Glen at 8:43 p.m. Oct. 16. The vehicle was unlocked, police said.
