Police blocked traffic on Palmer Drive from Schiller to York Road, while emergency crews tended to the victim behind a screen set up to block any view of him. Police at the scene offered no comment and would not confirm whether the young man had died.

According to early dispatch reports at the time of the incident, about 1:10 a.m. Saturday, the "subject was not conscious and not breathing." Dispatch reports indicated that the victim was a suicidal teenager.

Timothy Flynn, a sound engineer at Fitz's Spare Keys, which is located on the west side of the parking deck off the alley behind the police department, said management and staff at the bar were aware of the situation, but for the most part, patrons were not.

"We didn't see anything," Flynn said. "We were just informed that a young gentleman jumped off the side and committed suicide."

Flynn said that no one had confirmed a fatality to him, but a staff member at Fitz's has friends who live at Elmhurst Place Apartments, to the east of the parking deck across Palmer Drive, and they saw it happen.

"They called (the employee) and let him know," Flynn said.

The parking deck is four levels high, but on the east side, where the subject jumped, the distance to the ground is farther because the Palmer Drive underpass is lower than street level.

At about 1:45 a.m., it appeared the victim still had not been moved. A small crowd was gathering outside the back door of Fitz's, on the other side of the deck. Some of them had vehicles parked in the Schiller deck, which was cordoned off with police tape.

In the front of Fitz's, at 119 N. York Road, patrons headed out of the bar at closing time, seemingly unaware of what had transpired.
