St. Patrick's Day Holiday Brings Increased DUI Patrol and Roadside Check

They know you're going to drink, just make sure you have a ride.

Elmhurst police will step up their enforcement of DUI and seat belt laws between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. March 11-20 by placing extra officers on the streets to look for impaired drivers and seat belt violators.

The campaign is made possible by a year-long grant administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the goal is to reduce fatal and serious crashes.

While officers will be enforcing the seat belt and DUI laws at all hours, data shows the most deadly time on Illinois roadways is between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m.

In addition to the extra patrols, a roadside safety checkpoint is planned for 11:30 p.m. to 4 a.m. Saturday, March 12, on a major road in south Elmhurst.

Motorists are encouraged to drive safely and buckle up.  Anyone planning on drinking during St. Patrick’s Day-related festivities should make alternate driving arrangements.  People also are encouraged to contact police if they see a vehicle that appears to be driven by an intoxicated driver.
