Reported Doorbell-Ringing Gunman Really Just Guy Trying to Sell Newspaper Subscriptions: Cops

The police found no weapons on a man trying to sell the Chicago Tribune.

A supposed doorbell-ringing gunman in Elmhurst turned out to be nothing more than some guy trying to sell newspaper subscriptions, police said.

An East Cayuga Avenue resident alerted police to what he thought was a man armed with a gun showing up at his front door.

The Elmhurst man called the law about 4:30 p.m. Sunday and told of a "subject" he saw "ring his doorbell and walk away holding what looked like a handgun," police said.

The cops tracked down the supposed gunman and found he was "selling subscriptions to the Chicago Tribune," police said. "No weapon was found on the suspect."
