Rare June Furnace Fire Causes Minor Damage

No injuries reported in small fire on Fairfield Street.

Elmhurst firefighters quickly took care of a small fire Sunday afternoon in a home on Fairfield Street.

The fire department said a resident noticed smoke coming from his vents and called 911 around 4 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and found the source to be the home's furnace in the basement, according to a department official.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire shortly after arrival and limited the damage to about $5,000. No injuries were reported and the home remains habitable to the residents.
