Police Report Multiple Instances of Theft in Elmhurst

Several arrests made, but many more thefts go unsolved.

Theft Arrest

Charles D. Bradley, 24, 535 N. Michigan, Villa Park, was arrested and charged with attempted theft after he reportedly attempted to steal a generator that was at the rear of a home on the 500 block of West Third Street at 11:04 p.m. July 11. He fled the area in a silver Mercury and was later apprehended in Addison. He was released on I-bond on the attempted theft charges, then turned over to Addison for possible burglary charges, police said.

Gary N. Oliphant, 41, 4834 S. Drexel, Chicago, was arrested and charged with illegal scavenging and driving with a revoked license after police saw his vehicle at the back of a construction site at 4:30 a.m. July 12 at York and Lake streets. Oliphant reportedly was loading scrap metal into his vehicle. Police said he also was on parole for burglary. He was released on I-bond.

Robert Dean, 49, 1007 April Drive, Ozark, Mo., was arrested and charged with theft of a vehicle after he failed to return a silver 2010 Dodge Journey to Enterprise Leasing, 896 N. York Road, on June 17. The vehicle was located and Dean taken into custody by West Chicago police at 11:55 a.m. July 12.

Lashorn Hoskins, 31, 944 N. Drake, Chicago, and Laura Peterson, 28, 338 Whitter, Glen Ellyn, were arrested and charged with retail theft after they reportedly took 10 boxes of Prilosec worth $269 from Kmart, 265 S. Route 83, at 5:55 p.m. July 12. Peterson also was charged with driving with a suspended license. They were released on bond.

Residential Burglary

A resident of the 300 block of West Third Street found pry marks around her front door and the door partially open after she returned from grocery shopping at Jewel. She was gone from 10 to 11:55 a.m. July 12. Police did not say if anything is missing. An investigation is pending.

Commercial Burglary

Someone entered an open window at ADT Security, 505 W. Grand Ave., between 3:30 p.m. July 8 and 7 a.m. July 11 and took six spools of copper wire. Loss is estimated at $2,010.

Theft

Someone entered an unlocked vehicle on the 800 block of North York Road and removed a credit card reader and a black credit card imprinter between 7 p.m. June 30 and 11 a.m. July 1. Estimated loss is $75.

A resident of the 300 block of South Route 83 reported someone gained access to a checking account and had the victim’s direct deposit re-routed to another account. The report was made at 7:58 p.m. July 1.

Someone entered an unlocked car that was in an open garage on the 800 block of Stratford at 9:15 p.m. July 1. Nothing appeared to be missing.

Someone took a $300 necklace from a home on the 100 block of South York Road between May 8 and June 18. The victim told police on July 2 that she had allowed her son to have some friends over to spend the night, and they may have taken it.

A male and female refused to pay a $52 cab fare after 303 Taxi game them a ride at 11:41 p.m. July 3. A credit card was declined after the female was dropped off in Hinsdale. The cab driver was told to return to the 100 block of Pine Street in Elmhurst and the male would pay him. When the cab driver returned to Elmhurst, no one would answer the door. The victim was willing to sign complaints.

Someone apparently used the credit card of a resident on the 500 block of South Cedar Avenue between June 25 and 28 to purchase items on QVC. The victim contacted QVC after receiving a letter from the home shopping network informing him the items “he had ordered” had shipped. He learned his Citi MasterCard had been used to make the purchases, but the items are being shipped to a person the victim doesn’t know. The victim said he has never used his card to make purchases via QVC.

Someone used the business MasterCard of a man who works at Orthopedic Specialists, 360 W. Butterfield Road, to make several fraudulent purchases totaling more than $2,500.

Someone took a 24-inch white, blue and yellow Schwinn Landmark Beach cruiser from the grass area behind an apartment complex on the 100 block of South Kenmore between 9:30 p.m. July 5 and 8 a.m. July 7.

Someone stole construction bricks that were on the southwest corner of Scott Street and St. Charles Road. Six out of 30 pallets were reported missing at 8:04 a.m. July 7. A pallet contains 195 bricks and is valued at $585. They would have had to be moved by a forklift and a flat bed truck. Total value of the loss is $3,510.

Someone removed a Garmin GPS and about $10 in change from an unlocked vehicle parked on the 200 block of Pick Avenue between 10 p.m. July 6 and 9 a.m. July 7.

Someone stole a $200 trailer hitch on a maintenance vehicle parked on the south gravel lot at Bryan Middle School, 111 W. Butterfield Road, between 3:30 p.m. July 7 and 10:20 a.m. July 8.

Someone took about $6,000 worth of jewelry from a home on the 700 block of North Van Auken between June 17 and 5:30 p.m. July 7. The boxes the jewelry was in still contained multiple pieces of valuable jewelry, and other items in the residence were untouched.

Someone picked up a wallet at Jewel, 944 S. York St., at 4:27 p.m. July 8 and used multiple credit cards that were inside. Charges included more than $200 at Kohl’s, More than $180 at Kmart and $50 at Shell. The victim said the woman behind her kept ramming her with her cart in the checkout line, so she accidently left the wallet as she hurriedly tried to finish her transaction. Surveillance video shows the woman who was in the line behind her placing a bag over the wallet, completing her transaction and taking the wallet. She is described as about 30 years old, wearing workout-type clothing.

A resident on the 300 block of East Park Avenue reported that when he went out to get his newspaper at 7 a.m. July 9, he noticed his back gate was unlatched. When he sat down to read his paper outside, he noticed his table, solar lamp and pewter ash tray were missing. He told police that one week prior, his wind chimes also were taken. Loss is estimated at $100.

Someone stole a wallet and other items from the skate park, 665 S. York Road, at 5 p.m. July 9. The victim said he put his wallet inside a grocery bag with some snacks and placed it behind a bush while he skated. The victim’s friend saw two people take the bag.

Someone took an unlocked BMX Giant 16-inch bike from the bike rack south of Walgreen’s, 190 S. Palmer Drive, between 8:10 and 8:40 p.m. July 10. The bike is blue and gray and worth $250.

Someone took a wallet from a purse in a locked drawer on the 100 block of South Prospect between 2:15 and 4:20 p.m. July 11.  The Coach wristlet contained grocery cards, a debit and credit card and $5.

Someone stole a locked, 2007 Sure-Trac metal trailer between 4 p.m. July 8 and 9 a.m. July 11 from Vital Signs USA, 791 Industrial Drive. The trailer is valued at about $1,500.

Someone cut the lock to a storage locker in a basement garage on the 100 block of East Grand Avenue between noon July 3 and 3 p.m. July 8. Several golf items, a tent, two professional cosmetic machines, mattresses and eight drum cymbals worth a total of $3,599 was taken.

Someone entered an unlocked 1999 Chevy Tahoe parked in the driveway of a home on the 600 block of Thomas between 8:30 p.m. July 11 and 3 p.m. July 12 and took $10.

Someone wrote two counterfeit checks on a victim’s MB Financial Bank account between June 8 and July 7 for $250 and $850. The checks were cashed at a TCF Bank branch.
