Police Report Instances of Theft, Harassment and Suspicious Circumstances

Woman allegedly makes off with garage sale money; bikes, patio umbrellas and a car are among many items stolen.

Theft Arrest

Antonia Bauza, 30, 108 Edgewood, Streamwood, was arrested and charged under city ordinance with theft after she allegedly took between $60 and $100 from a garage sale on the 600 block of Lorraine at 1:37 p.m. June 17. She was released on I-bond. Police stopped the vehicle she was in, which was driven by Delatorre Cruz, 40, of the same address.  Cruz was charged under city ordinance with driving without a license and released on bond.

Vernetta Williams, 37, 838 S. 18th Ave., Maywood, was cited for no insurance and leaving the scene of an accident after she allegedly struck a parked vehicle with her Dodge Charger at 195 S. Route 83 at 7:31 p.m. June 11.

Residential Burglary

A resident of the 100 block of East Lake Street reported that he left his apartment with his wife at 10 a.m. June 13 and placed a piece of paper in the door so they would know if someone had entered the apartment. When they returned at about 7:40 p.m., they found the piece of paper on the floor and things in the apartment had been rifled through. Several pieces of jewelry were missing.

Contact with a Registered Sex Offender

Kenneth Flowers, 35, 822 N. Lombard, Elmhurst, was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license and on a warrant for violation of sex offender registration after an incident at 11:44 a.m. June 12 at North End and Adele streets. Police, responding to a call of a suspicious person, saw Flowers park a green jeep in the area and walk down the 800 block of Lombard. He returned to the vehicle a few minutes later. He was taken to DuPage County Jail.

Harassment

A resident of the 300 block of East Wilson Street told police a contractor was sending threatening text messages regarding a dispute of payment for some work done at the home. At 1:48 p.m. June 10, the complainant received a text message saying “How’s my money looking? Did you think I forgot about it? You need to give me the money you owe me. If not, enjoy your porch while it is still there.” The offender was advised to have no more contact with the compainant. A no trespass notice was served.

Deceptive Practice

James Crout, 42, 45 N. Mayfield, Chicago, was arrested and charged with using a fraudulent check to purchase items at Jewel, 944 S. York Road, at 7:38 p.m. June 14. Another suspect fled the scene.

Identity Theft

A resident of the 100 block of East Wilson told police at 7:15 p.m. June 15 that she was told by an employee of the Internal Revenue Service that someone had filed a tax return under her name using her Social Security number. She was asked if she had filed her taxes under a different name or address, which she had not. The IRS would not provide any further information.

An Elmhurst resident reported to police at 2:55 p.m. June 15 that on May 20 she lost her Elmhurst Public Library card, and it was used fraudulently to check out 41 DVDs and video games from the library, which have not been returned.

Theft

Someone stole an unlocked BMX bike from the bike rack on the south side of Walgreen’s, 160 N. Palmer Street. Estimated loss is $60.

Someone stole two patio umbrellas from the front of Pizza Palace, 117 N. Addison St. between 10:30 p.m. June 12 an 11:20 a.m. June 13.

An employee of Larry Roesch Chrysler, 200 W. Grand Ave., reported that someone removed a gold 2007 Chevy Suburban from the used car area between 10 a.m. June 9 and 3 p.m. June 11.

Someone smashed the front driver side window of a Red GMC Savana parked at 665 S. York Road between 6:45 and 7:50 p.m. June 13 and removed a red leather Fossil purse worth $120. The pursed contained a wallet, $40, several credic cards, a drivers license and a black umbrella.

Someone stole an unlocked Schwinn bicycle from the rack near Walgreen’s, 160 Palmer Drive, between 5:15 p.m. June 9 and 3 a.m. June 10.

Someone entered an unlocked Acura Legend parked at 197 W. Armitage between 3:30 p.m. June 13 and 3:06 p.m. June 14 and removed a leather wallet containing ID and other miscellaneous cards.

Someone stole a Mongoose BMX bike from the bike rack at the parking lot at Vallette and Division streets between 8:10 and 8:30 p.m. June 14.

Someone stole a red Roadmaster bicycle worth $50 from Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave., at 1:46 p.m. June 18.

Someone stole an orange and silver Next brand mountain bike from 211 W. First St. at 5:12 p.m. June 18.

Someone smashed the rear drivers side window of a vehicle parked at Berens Park at 5:30 p.m. June 18 and took a purse.

Someone stole a bottle of champagne from Williams Liquors, 925 S. York Road, at 12:54 p.m. June 19. Surveillance video showed a man in his 20s, average build, with a goatee, wearing a black hat, white shirt, jean shorts and black shoes. He left in a red Chrysler 200 southbound on York Road.

Suspicious Circumstances

A resident of the 400 block of Rex Street reported he saw a man pulling on his neighbor’s side door at 9:40 p.m. June 13. He asked the suspect if he was looking for the resident. The suspect left on a bicycle.

A resident of the 100 block of West Virginia told police at 10:42 p.m. June 15 that she was receiving phone calls from an unknown man saying his name is “Snoop.” The suspect then told her “I called your mom and I see you in your window.” Moments later, she noticed a man with a bandana over his face wearing a black shirt and tan shorts in the common area of her building.

A resident of the 600 block of Parkside received a call from someone claiming to be from American Dream Sweepstakes at 12:16 p.m. June 18. He was told he won $1 million. The victim was going to withdraw $1,500 from his bank account and wire transfer it to Costa Rica, but the vice president at the bank said the activity was suspicious and likely a scam. No money was exchanged.
