Police Investigate Burglary on North Walnut, First Congregational Discovers Thousands in Losses

Also, man racks up hospital bills in his brother's name, and 90 packs of cigarettes stolen.

Residential Burglary

Police are investigating a burglary on the 400 block of North Walnut that occurred between 7:28 and 10:48 a.m. Feb. 23. A 55-inch flat screen TV was removed from the home.

Retail Theft Arrests

Rosa Maria Rojas, 38, 1S117 Michigan, Villa Park, was arrested and charged with retail theft after she attempted to leave Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, without paying for merchandise at 5:36 p.m. Feb. 18. She was released on bond.

Someone fraudulently used a victim's Discover card to charge $29.95 to Experian.com three times on Oct. 28.

A man used his brother's name when he was admitted to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital for treatment on Oct. 31, and outstanding bills of $4,500 for the treatment are recorded in the victim's name. The offender was wanted on a warrant and the victim believes that is why his brother used his name. The victim has not been able to talk to his brother because he was in jail for a time, then evicted from his home.

A stolen vehicle was found parked at 737 N. Oaklawn Ave. at 12:30 a.m. Feb. 20. It was listed as stolen out of Channahon.

A man left his unlocked car in the 10 minute spot in front of Brain Freeze, 110 W. Park Ave. between 1:15 and 1:45 p.m. Feb. 20, and when he returned and drove away, he noticed his trunk was bouncing up and down. He pulled over an realized his two longboard skateboards worth $200 apiece had been taken.

A patient at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, 155 E. Brush Hill Road, said his wallet was stolen while he left the room to get x-rays between 12:34 and 12:41 p.m. Feb. 20. The wallet contained a state ID, debit and credit cards, $226, a social security card and other ID. Surveillance footage does not show anyone in the room other than the nurse and the victim.

Someone cut the chain link fence around the back storage lot at Semblex, 388 N. Carol, and broke into two trailers on the property. The first had two Master locks on it, which were cut. Taken was an aluminum automotive racing hydraulic jack worth $480. The second trailer's pad lock was cut, but the heavy machinery inside was not taken.

Someone took 90 packs of Newport cigarettes worth $500 from Convenient Food Mart, 416 N. York, at 12:53 a.m. Feb. 22. The alarm had been set off and the front door to the business shattered. Damage is estimated at $1,000.

A student discovered at 3:20 p.m. Feb. 20 that his $400 iPhone had been taken from his locked gym locker at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road.

A representative of First Congregational United Church of Christ, 235 S. Kenilworth, told police that urns, silver plates and trays, and other religious items worth $5,000, and an acoustic guitar, speaker and amp worth $500  had been taken from the church over a period of several years. The items, worth about $5,000, were discovered missing after an audit. The report was made Feb. 23.

A resident of Brush Hill purchased a vehicle for $9,800 via Craigslist on Feb. 22. After the purchase, the victim learned the vehicle had been stolen out of Evanston. The vehicle was returned to its owner.

Someone removed the catalytic converter from a Lexus SUV parked at 155 E. Brush Hill Road between 8:15 p.m. Feb. 22 and  10 a.m. Feb. 23. Loss is estimated at $2,000.
