Police Blotter: Businesses Robbed of Cigarettes, Silver Flakes

Tools, cash, bikes, computers, groceries, jewelry and more also stolen from Elmhurst residents.

Commercial Burglary

About 45 cartons of Newport menthol cigarettes were stolen from Cigarette Center, 573 N. York, at 4:19 a.m. July 2. Police responded to an alarm at the business and discovered the front door was forced open.

Two computers, silver flakes and a collection of coins were taken from Lee-Wel Printing Corp., 720 N. Larch, between 7 p.m. July 1 and 5:32 a.m. July 2. A window on a rear door was broken.

Retail Theft Arrests

A 17-year-old was arrested and charged with retail theft and unlawful use of a weapon at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 2:17 p.m. June 22. Police said they found a machete in his backpack. The suspect was released to his mother, and charged are pending juvenile petition.

Kingsley K. Agyemang, 32, 620 S. York Road Apt. 201, was arrested and charged with retail theft after allegedly concealing a wallet and bracelet at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 1:23 p.m. June 21. Agyemang was released on bond.

Theft

About $1,700 worth of tools were stolen from a van parked on a driveway on the 400 block of East Court between 9 p.m. June 17 and 9 a.m. June 18.

Police were called to Burger King, 436 N. York Road, because the manager reported $58.83 was taken from two of the cash drawers between 12:30 and 6:41 p.m. June 18.

A locked Giant Cypress mountain bike was taken from the laundry room of an apartment complex on the 300 block of South West Avenue between 10:30 a.m. June 17 and 10:30 a.m. June 20. The bike was worth $400.

A resident of the 100 block of East North Avenue sent $1,800 via Money Gram for the purchase of a Honda CBR motorcycle on June 19 per the suspect's instruction. As of June 20, the victim had not received a tracking number and has had no further communication with the suspect.

A $433 laptop and a high-powered flashlight worth $250 were taken from a truck parked on the 200 block of East Vallette at 11:25 p.m. June 25.

A GPS unit and leather case were taken from an unlocked vehicle parked on a driveway on the 400 block of East South Street between 7 p.m. June 25 and 6 a.m. June 26. Loss is estimated at $230.

A purse was taken from an unlocked vehicle parked on the 100 block of East Fremont between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. June 25.

A GPS worth $450 and a toiletry bag were taken from an unlocked vehicle parked on the 400 block of Larch between June 13 and 19.

Someone fraudulently withdrew $4,000 from a US Bank account belonging to an Elmhurst resident on June 21. The money was withdrawn at a branch in St. Louis.

A Realtor with Coldwell Banker, 190 N. York Road, was contacted by a suspect who stated he worked for Blue Rose Marketing. He said he could set up advertising for her on shopping carts at the new Mariano's Fresh Market in Elmhurst. The victim paid the man, but when she attended the grand opening of Mariano's, none of the carts had the advertising on them. She was informed she had been the victim of a scam. A police report was filed June 28, and an investigation is pending.

A woman left her wallet on the condiments counter at Elija's Coffee Shop, on the 100 block of Vallette, between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. June 29. When she realized the wallet was missing, she went back to the shop. She found her wallet, but $500 was missing.

A man about 40 to 50 years old with a shaved head, wearing a blue T-shirt, jeans and gym shoes stole a dozen roses and a gift bag from Jewel, 944 S. York, at 4:05 p.m. June 29. He was last seen driving eastbound on Butterfield Road in a gold Ford Ranger.

An unknown man left Mariano's, 678 N. York Road, with a full grocery cart belonging to a customer at 11:20 a.m. June 30, while the customer was at the service counter. The suspect then allegedly returned to the store and took his cart, which he had left behind. Total loss in groceries is about $98.

Someone removed the hood of a white, 2013 Chrysler 300 that was parked in a secured area at Larry Roesch Chrysler, 200 W. Grand Ave., between 6 p.m. June 29 and 10 a.m. July 1. About $4,500 worth of additional damage to the vehicle also was discovered.

A locked, yellow Schwinn Varsity bicycle was taken from the laundry area of a building on the 400 block of West St. Charles Road between 5 p.m. June 28 and 7 p.m. June 30.

A black, Charbroil American Gourmet Smoker worth $150 was taken from the back yard of a home on the 100 block of Oakland Grove between 1 and 2 p.m. July 1. A neighbor said she saw a white SUV pull into the victim's driveway at that time, but she did not see anyone get out and remove the smoker.

Two rings and three bracelets were removed from a jewelry box in the master bedroom of a home on the 100 block of South Chandler between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. July 2. The victim told police her husband was moving out and had movers at the home. The jewelry was found inside the moving truck and charges are pending, police said.

A check for $13.14 was fraudulently used at Walgreen's after a victim left his checkbook in an unlocked desk drawer in an open area of a warehouse on the 900 block of North Oaklawn between 8:25 a.m. July 1 and 8:25 a.m. July 2. When the victim checked his account online, he noticed the withdrawal and retrieved his checkbook, which was missing the check.

A full-size Goodyear Wrangler spare tire and rim was taken from a Dodge Ram parked at McMaster Carr, 600 N. County Line Road, between 9:50 a.m. and 6:20 p.m. July 3. Loss is estimated at $500.
