Neighbor Sees Suspicious Person Before Home on Kenilworth Burglarized Tuesday

Residential Burglary

A resident of the 200 block of South Kenilworth returned home on Tuesday afternoon and found the bedrooms ransacked and the back window of the home broken. The burglary occurred between 10 a.m. and 2:50 p.m. Jan. 31. Numerous jewelry items and cash were taken. A neighbor said that during that time period, a man with a red and gray plaid jacket, gray or tan messenger bag and skull cap was knocking at her door and ringing the bell. The woman did not answer the door, but her dog barked and the man rode away on his bicycle toward the victim's house.

Theft Arrest

Soila Tellez, 42, 135 E. Grand Ave., Bensenville, was arrested and charged with retail theft at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 11:47 a.m. Jan. 28. Tellez allegedly was seen by a security officer retagging clothing items with lower price tags. She paid $30.41 for items that actually cost $102.60, police said. When exiting the store, she was allegedly seen taking a swim suit coverup and placing it into her bag without paying for it. She was released on bond.

Theft

A diamond ring worth $5,500 was taken from an overnight bag that was left at the victim's desk at a building on the 600 block of County Line Road Jan. 26. The victim told police she left the bag unattended while she went to lunch.

Someone removed a handicap placard from a vehicle while it was parked on the 400 block of Argyle sometime in November.

A wallet was taken from the check-writing stand in a checkout lane at Jewel, 944 S. York St., at 9 a.m. Jan. 26. The victim said he had just finished paying for his groceries and left his wallet. When he realized it was missing, he asked the cashier about it and no one had turned it in. The wallet contained $60 and a social security card.

Two people told police their wallets were stolen between 7:56 and 8:10 p.m. Jan. 26, after they paid for their Metra tickets and got on the train in Oak Park. They said they hadn't been distracted by anyone and they don't recall any suspicious individuals on the train.

The owner of a home on the 400 block of West Butterfield reported that numerous items worth $3,800 had been taken from the home by a former renter on Jan. 14. The woman identified the suspect and police are investigating.

A Swiss Army Watch worth about $500 was taken from the top dresser drawer in a bedroom of a home on the 300 block of North Elm between 9 p.m. Jan. 27 and 5 a.m. Jan. 28. The victim told police he had a get-together with about 10 people at the house, and three of them he had not met before.

Seven suspicious withdrawals were made on a debit card of a resident of the 400 block of South Prospect on Jan. 28. Harris Bank notified the victim that there was one debit withdrawal at Chicago Parking Meter at 11:40 a.m. and six withdrawals at Jewel, each averaging $90, between 12:23 and 3:04 p.m.

Someone broke the front passenger side window of a vehicle parked at Xsport Fitness, 631 W. North Ave., between 8 and 8:53 p.m. Jan. 28. Nothing was reported missing.

Renters on the 800 block of South Euclid reportedly gave their landlord two rent checks on a closed account, a check from a charity that was returned because the account was not located and another check that was returned for an unknown signature. One of the offenders allegedly admitted that one of the checks "might have been forged." The victim, who reported the incidents at 8:36 p.m. Jan. 29, is planning to sign complaints against the suspects.

An employee of Patten Industries, 635 W. Lake St., reported that his W2 forms were taken from his mailbox at work between Jan. 16 and 24. He said that a former employee for the human resources department either placed the forms in the mailbox or gave them to a representative from his department. The former employee denies any knowledge or involvement.

Someone took a $500 Toro snow blower that was parked outside a garage on the 100 block of Maple between 8 and 11 a.m. Jan. 30.
