Movement in the Ranks at Elmhurst Police Department

Deputy police chief and sergeant sworn in.

Elmhurst City Council chambers were packed Monday night for the swearing in of two Police Department personnel.

Dan Buenz was promoted to deputy police chief, filling the position held by Jim Doherty, who had been with the department for 31 years. Buenz spent the last four years as commander of the detective division.

"He has done every job in the police department," including patrolman and high school liaison, Mayor Pete DiCianni said before the swearing in. "I've known this man a long time. Elmhurst is blessed to have men like him."

Mike Campise was promoted to sergeant. He served 25 years on the force, 11 as detective.

"The key to Elmhurst is the quality of its people," DiCianni said. "Police, fire, public works—you are our PR people, in direct contact with the residents. This is just a representation of the quality people we have."

DiCianni thanked former Deputy Chief Doherty for his years of service.

"Jim retired on Friday, making these promotions possible," DiCianni said.

Doherty will now be an asset to the Elmhurst Park District, DiCianni said, as he begins his position as park ambassador.
