Updated: Man Shot Dead by Police in Unincorporated Addison

Gunman fired numerous times on police, who were investigating a hit-and-run.

A man shot by police after he fired numerous times on them has died.

George R. Scoville, 47, was identified as the gunman, the Daily Herald reported Tuesday.

A hit-and-run traffic accident at Lake Street and Lombard Road in Addison reportedly preceded the shooting Monday evening, according to information provided by Addison police.

The accident, which did not result in injuries, occurred at about 5:40 p.m. At about 6:30 p.m., Addison officers responded to a home on the 20W300 block of Belmont Place near Addison Trail High School to investigate the accident. Scoville exited the home, pointed a gun at the officers and began shooting.

He retreated back into the residence. Police set up a perimeter and immediately evacuated the neighborhood, including the high school.

Scoville again exited the house and fired his weapon numerous times, police said. Police shot Scoville, who was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead.

The DuPage County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating.

It is sad that there was loss of life. The gunfire resulted in a lock down @ Addison Trail high school until the matter was resolved and everyone's safety was insured.

Thankfully the only person killed was the suspect. The officers showed tremendous restraint and responded professionally. The Suspect chose this course of action and forced the police response. The officers risked their lives and are heros in my book.

I agree with you but I don't know if we as just citizen's can do anything to stop that practice. IRead More wish that each cyclist had to have a license, and that it was enforced by laws and police, on the bike so that people could report occurrences and have the person receive a ticket just like a person driving an auto. That would make sense.

A couple of years ago, Villa Park installed "State Law- must stop for pedestrians" signsRead More on the roadways where the Great Western and Prairie Paths cross. I saw a big increase in path users barreling across the streets with no regard for the stop signs on the path.

I was really hoping that the Elmhurst Police would sound in on this info-I do understand kids willRead More be kids, but if one of them is hurt, that adult driver will need to live with that for the rest of their life-so let's come up with a solution for both bicyclist and cars to be in harmony. I really think that a step up in enforcement in the bicycle laws would help-just like the drunk driving laws-believe me the bicycle laws are just as important.
