Man Arrested for Prowling at 3 a.m. Friday After Allegedly Trying Car Doors

One officer said he was familiar with the suspect.

Elmhurst police arrested a man for prowling after he allegedly was seen pulling on car door handles on the 700 block of Fairfield Avenue at 3:09 a.m. May 18.

Police caught up with Derrick Whitehead, 37, 342 Granville, Bellwood, in the area of Hillside and Madison streets. They followed him on foot and said he was "zigzagging through the neighborhood" before he ended up on Spring Road. Police said he caused a disturbance in front of 7 Eleven, 525 S. Spring Road, when he began yelling and trying to engage customers in a conversation.

Police said he continued walking and was eventually stopped by an Elmhurst police officer, who said he recognized him from having previous contact with him. Whitehead allegedly gave police false information about his whereabouts that evening. He was cited under city ordinance for prowling.
