Look at All the Stuff That's Been Stolen Lately

In one weird incident, a woman's credit card is stolen and the thief, in making a purchase, presents the stolen card to the victim, who was working the cash register at the time.

Theft Arrests

Ashley M. Hernandez, 20, 6010 Springside Ave., Downers Grove, and Stephanie J. Pauling, 18, 1212 Dogwood Lane, Carol Stream, were arrested and charged with retail theft at 6:13 p.m. Feb. 25. A loss prevention officer  at Dominick’s, 215 S. Route 83, saw Hernandez put a bottle of alcohol inside her purse. Pauling then took the purse and they both walked toward the exit doors. They were released on I-bond.

Irma Amador, 22, 4 N. Highview, Addison, was arrested and charged with retail theft after she was seen placing various cosmetics in her pockets and wallet at Sears Essentials, 265 S. Route 83, at 3:13 p.m. March 1. The items totaled $59.48. She was released on bond.

Theft

Someone removed seven catalytic converters from vans parked at Comcast, 688 Industrial Drive, between noon Jan. 1 and 2 p.m. Feb. 14. The offender cut a hole in the north-side fence to enter the lot.

Someone took a 2000 Nissan Xterra while it was parked on the 100 block of Fellows Court between 5 p.m. Feb. 15 and 11 a.m. Feb. 21.

A woman reported she had lost her debit card after making a purchase at Panera Bread at 8:06 p.m. Feb. 20. She went back to work at CVS Pharmacy next door, at 110 E. North Ave. The person who found her debit card then came into CVS and tried to use the stolen card at the store to make a purchase. The thief presented the card to the victim, who was working the cash register at the time. Police are reviewing surveillance video.

Someone removed an AT&T Flight cellular phone from a locked gym locker at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 15. The phone is valued at $250.

Someone pumped $38.38 in gas into a vehicle at Shell, 301 W. Butterfield Road, and left without paying. The incident occurred at 12:10 p.m. Feb. 23.

Two juveniles took a Slim Jim beef stick and a pair of pliers from Sears Essentials, 265 S. Route 83, at 4:45 p.m. Feb. 23. Total loss is $15.68.

Someone removed a black Apple 32G iPhone from a locker in the girls gym locker room at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, between 2:21 and 3:11 p.m. Feb. 18. Another student also reported her Verizon Droid was taken from the locker room. An investigation is pending.

A resident of the 200 block of East Armitage, who was on vacation, told police that someone had taken her car without permission between 7 a.m. Feb. 6 and 1:25 p.m. Feb. 21. Police reported the victim’s tenant had stolen the black Acura Coupe from inside the secured, detached garage, then was involved in a crash on Interstate 90 at River Road. The suspect was arrested and is currently in custody for aggravated DUI, possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, as well as on a larceny warrant out of DuPage County and a warrant for burglary out of Villa Park. Criminal charges for the vehicle theft are pending further investigation.

Someone broke the passenger side window of a vehicle parked on the 100 block of North Willow between 4:20 and 5:30 p.m. Feb. 24 and stole a GPS worth $400.

Someone smashed the front drivers side window on a 2007 Chevy Express van parked on the 600 block of South Poplar Avenue between 7 and 10 p.m. Feb. 24 and stole a GPS worth $130.

A woman suspects her deceased father’s friend of stealing his credit card, wallet, checkbook and 401k paperwork. The woman owns the house on the 400 block of East Adams Street, where her father lived and the friend visited from time to time. She told police she searched the home for his wallet and other items but couldn’t find them. She said there was at least $26,000 charged to his credit card between Dec. 26 and Feb. 25.

The general manager of MedSpeed, 650 W. Grand Ave. #306, told police that at about 2:13 p.m. on Feb. 25, someone delivered a lockable yellow canvas and leather bag. At about 2:50 p.m., the money room supervisor was unable to locate the bag. Exact content were unknown, but they suspect about $300 to $800 and personal checks made payable to doctors were in the bag. The company provides services to medical sites.

Security officers at Dominick’s, 215 S. Route 83, saw a man load up a cart with assorted 5-hour energy bottles totaling $160.99 at 6:19 p.m. Feb. 26 and walk out the door without paying. The security officer chased the offender, who pushed the guard, got into a black Honda and fled southbound on Route 83. The offender left the merchandise and his coat in the parking lot.

Someone gained possession of a check belonging to a resident of the 300 block of East Ridge Jan. 19, and wrote the check to Bank of America in the amount of $1,644.04.  The incident was reported on Feb. 28. The victim does not have a Bank of America account; police have no suspects.

Someone took an Apple Macbook Pro computer worth $1,300 from a home on the 700 block of South Spring Road between 11 p.m. Feb. 26 and 2 a.m. Feb. 27. The victim reported he had a party at his home that night, and the computer was in the basement and being used to play music. Other people at the party saw someone near the computer but didn’t see him take it.

Someone removed keys that were left on a counter at CVS Pharmacy, 110 W. North Ave., between 12:23 and 12:30 p.m. March 1. Video surveillance shows a woman removing the keys from the counter, then removing a $50 Michael Kors charm and turning the keys in to the pharmacist. The woman, described as about 40 years old with dark hair, about 5 feet, 6 inches tall, 125 pounds and wearing a striped sweatshirt, jeans and a black leather jacket, is then seen purchasing 10 hypodermic needles.

Someone attempted to break into a garage on the 200 block of Poplar Avenue between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. March 1. The service door to the garage was opened and a ¼-inch pry mark was seen on the door and jamb.
