Light Poles Laying Around, Spray Paint in Demand, Windows Smashed in Elmhurst

Here's a look at about a month's worth of property damage reports from Elmhurst police.

Elmhurst police have been busy taking property damage reports over the past month. 

The owner of a red Buick Lucerne found a 2-foot scratch on top of the vehicle's trunk after she had been shopping at Jewel, 944 S. York Road, between 1:30 and 2:15 p.m. June 22. Damage is estimated at $500.

Graffiti was found on the AT&T phone box at 921 S. Mitchell. The damage occurred between 9 a.m. June 17 and 1:52 p.m. June 25.

A street sign, fire hydrant and paper recycling box on the 900 block of South Swain were marked with graffiti between noon June 24 and 12:42 p.m. June 26. Police said there has been widespread graffiti in the area.

Someone spray-painted the rear of Sue's Hallmark, 197 E. Butterfield, with black spray paint. The incident was reported at 7:14 p.m. June 29.

Someone broke the fire extinguisher cabinet on the fourth floor of the parking deck at 100 W. Larch. The damage was reported at 10:25 p.m. June 29.

Someone set off fireworks in a mailbox on the 900 block of Mitchell sometime between 11:30 p.m. July 3 and 1 p.m. July 4, causing $500 worth of damage to a window and door in the front of the home, police said. The victim said he heard a loud bang but didn't investigate until the next morning.

A flower pot was tipped over and trees pulled out of the ground at a home on the 200 block of North Myrtle Avenue between 7:30 p.m. July 4 and 5 a.m. July 5.

A stop sign was taken from Eggleston and Cottage Hill between 10 a.m. July 4 and 8:30 a.m. July 5.

The window was broken on a Toyota parked on a driveway on the 300 block of East Park Avenue between 8 p.m. July 4 and 9:40 a.m. July 5. A brick was found in the vehicle.

A door of a home on the 300 block of East Oneida was damaged after someone attempted to break in between noon July 5 and 8 a.m. July 6. The home is vacant and scheduled for demolition.

Someone smashed the window of a school bus parked at KinderCare, 556 W. North Ave., between 4 p.m. July 5 and 9:40 a.m. July 7. Police said it appeared the window had been shot with a pellet or other similar projectile.

Pry marks were found on a side door of a home on the 400 block of Madison Street. The owners went through the house and didn't notice anything missing. Damage occurred between 4:30 p.m. July 3 and 6:55 p.m. July 7, according to the report.

The west brick wall of the vacant Elmhurst Lincoln Mercury car dealership, 150 W. Grand Ave., was defaced with black spray paint. An officer on patrol found the graffiti at 6:34 p.m. July 9.

Graffiti was found on the pump station at Jackson and Saylor streets. The damage occurred between noon July 8 and 9 a.m. July 9, according to police.

Someone left an aluminum foil packet containing a burning, unknown substance on the porch of a home on the 900 block of Washington between 9 p.m. July 11 and 8 a.m. July 12. The item smelled and caused scorching on the concrete.

Someone spray-painted the side of a Boy Scout trailer parked on the 900 block of South Swain Avenue between midnight June 24 and 10:38 p.m. July 13. Damage is estimated at $800. This was not the first time the trailer had been vandalized. A previous incident was reported last December.

Someone made impression in fresh concrete on the northeast corner of Chandler and Forest between 10 a.m. July 12 and 8 a.m. July 16.

A city light pole was found lying in the grass in front of a home on the 200 block of East May at 1:59 a.m. July 18.

Debris reportedly caused by the city resurfacing the street on the 500 block of Armitage hit a vehicle and caused $2,000 worth of damage at 8:10 a.m. July 18.

Four city parking signs at Oak and Armitage were spray-painted sometime in the last two months, it was reported at 1:34 p.m. July 20.

A light post was removed from a parkway lawn on the 800 block of Hawthorne between 7 p.m. July 20 and 7:50 a.m. July 21. The light was found on a neighbor's front lawn. Damage is estimated at $200.

The lower corner of the windshield on a Lexus parked on the 400 block of North Elm was smashed between 4:30 and 8:50 p.m. July 21. Pieces of a broken beer bottle were found inside the vehicle, police said.

Damage to a city light pole at 107 N. Adell Place was discovered at 6:10 p.m. July 22. 

The sitting wall by the south door of a business on the 100 block of South York Road was vandalized, resulting $200 in damage. The damage was discovered at 8 p.m. July 20.

The rear passenger window of a vehicle parked on the 600 block of Fairview was smashed at 11:12 a.m. July 25.

A safety window in the café area at Mariano's, 678 N. York Road, was damaged between 1:30 and 6:50 p.m. July 25. It is 15 feet off the ground; outside surveillance cameras are being reviewed. Damaged is estimated at $250.
