Hockey Equipment Worth $1,000 Taken From Unlocked Car and Ring Stolen From Woman's Hand

Identity theft and forgery also are prominent in Elmhurst police reports.

Someone opened a Comcast account using the personal information of a resident on the 700 block of North Van Auken. The account has been open since 2006, but the resident only recently discovered it. It was reported to police at 9:05 a.m. Aug. 24.

Someone removed a construction sign for On The Level Builders from a 5-foot post in front of a construction site on the 500 block of South Fairfield sometime between Aug. 19 and 10 a.m. Aug. 24. The 30-by-24-inch sign was worth $125.

A resident of the 200 block of South Fairfield reported at 12:36 p.m. Aug. 24 that someone stole a personal check and money order made out to him sometime back in April. The items reportedly were taken from his mailbox. The victim told police he owns several properties in Elmhurst and his tenants often mail payments to him by check or money order. Both were cashed; an investigation is pending.

About $1,000 worth of hockey equipment was taken from an unlocked vehicle parked on the 600 block of South Spring Road between 7:45 p.m. Aug. 22 and 3 p.m. Aug 24.

On Aug. 24, a woman on the 400 block of May Street told police that her ex-husband has been making fraudulent payments using her bank account. She said she noticed two unauthorized charges to AT&T. Upon calling the company, they told her the payments were for service at the residence she formerly shared with her ex-husband.

Someone stole a Louis Vuitton purse and wallet valued at $4,000 from a driveway on the 400 block of Emery between 9:15 and 9:45 a.m. Aug. 28. The victim was having a garage sale when the items were taken. The purse included a drivers license, credit cards, car and house keys, a safe deposit box key and $150.

Someone removed a silver Schwinn bicycle worth $250 from the back of a pickup truck parked on the 100 block of North Hampshire Avenue between 8:30 p.m. Aug. 28 and 9:05 a.m. Aug. 29. 

Someone stole a red and brown Schwinn 10-speed bike from an open garage on the 400 block of East Vallette between noon Aug. 26 and noon Aug. 28. The bike is worth $30.

A resident of the 400 block of South Stratford reported at 9:31 a.m. Aug. 30 that he received four confirmation letters in the mail for credit card accounts he did not authorize.

Someone used the Discover card number of a resident on the 700 block of North Howard to make a $173 purchase in Connecticut on Aug. 3. The incident was reported at 2:40 p.m. Aug. 30.

Someone stole a wallet containing a drivers license, Social Security card, J-pass, Visa card, debit card and $70 from the bleachers at Elmhurst College, 190 S. Prospect Ave., between 6 and 8:30 p.m. Aug. 30. The victim told police he forgot his wallet on the bleachers while he was playing kickball. Upon checking his accounts, he noticed his Visa card had been used at Caribou Coffee for a $4 charge, and his debit card was charged multiple times at vending machines on Elmhurst College campus for $1.25 each time.

A resident on the 100 block of East Grantley reported that someone made an unauthorized withdrawal on her debit card to Comcast for $230 on Aug. 26.

Someone withdrew money from the checking account of a resident on the 400 block of South Washington Street. Police did not say how much money was stolen, but the incident was reported at 11:22 a.m. Sept. 1.

A 17-year-old girl is suspected of forging six checks belonging to her mother between Aug. 3 and 10. The victim has been working with DuPage County Senior Services with regard to the theft, which totaled $1,750, and mistreatment by her daughter. The daughter allegedly admitted to forging the checks, was arrested and charged with forgery, and taken to DuPage County Jail.

A boy was caught attempting to leave Jewel, 944 S. York Road, without paying for a 20-ounce Gatorade and a pizza puff, worth $3.01, at 3:58 p.m. Sept. 1. Security held the boy, who was later released to his parents without charges.

Someone reportedly entered a locked apartment on the 400 block of West Butterfield between 10 p.m. Aug. 30 and 5 p.m. Aug. 31 and removed a gold colored wrist watch and diamond engagement ring. The victim told police the items were removed from her body while she was sleeping.
