Elmhurst Woman Charged with Attempted Murder of a Child

Bond has been set at $2 million for Sandra Clanton of Elmhurst, the 39-year-old who allegedly slashed her infant grandson in the face, DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett said Sept. 17.

Clanton is facing attempted first degree murder, a Class X felony; aggravated battery to a child, a Class 3 felony; and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, a Class 3 felony. 

On Sept. 11, at about 10:30 p.m., Clanton allegedly picked up the infant, placed him near the kitchen sink and slammed his head into the sink, according to a press release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. She then allegedly cut his face with a knife. 

The baby's mother grabbed the child and left the residence seeking medical assistance.  Elmhurst police officers arrived shortly after and took Clanton into custody. She was taken to a local hospital, where she remained under watch until her bond hearing this morning. 

Clanton's next court appearance is Sept. 30 in front of Judge Daniel Guerin.

Elmhurst police have charged Sandra F. Clanton, 39, 110 Willow Road, Elmhurst, with attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery of a child and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Around 11 p.m. on Sept. 11, Elmhurst Police responded to Clanton's home, where they found her being subdued by another person, Police Chief Steve Neubauer said Sept. 15.

Clanton's grandson,  a 9-month-old boy, had sustained knife wounds on his face and other areas of his body, Neubauer said. The boy's mother, whose address is listed in Southern Illinois, also was in the home at the time of the attack.

The child was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released, according to a press release.

Clanton is being held in a psychiatric unit. She will be taken to DuPage County Jail upon her release. Bond is expected to be set at $2 million.

"This is a very tragic set of circumstances," Neubauer said. "We're very lucky that the child sustained only minor injuries."
