An Elmhurst woman suspects someone tried to break into her South York Street home early Monday morning, police said.

The woman "believes someone tried to gain access to her basement though a fire escape basement window," police said.

The resident "can narrow down the time frame as she heard a loud, banging sound below her bedroom window during the night," police said. "She did not look outside at that point, but noticed it this morning when she saw a small amount of dirt on the floor of the escape window area and bootprints leading away from the window."

Here we go again. As the weather gets warmer, the low life scum will come out from under their rocks to steal from the hard working law abiding citizens. We need a strong police presence out in the neighborhoods to catch these fools and throw them in jail. I'm counting on the Elmhurst Police Department to do a good job this year!!!!

I would also recommend that homeowners invest in motion detector lights for strategic areas outside their homes and stay alert to odd behaviors in the neighborhood, day or night. Finally, if you hear unusual noises on your property in the middle of the night, phone the police! Jeepers.

In other breaking news, an Elmhurst man thought he saw a large person standing by his front door, but in the morning it turned out to be a coat hanging on the coat rack.

id plant poison ivy and oak along the sides of the house, maybe some sharp metal objects that will slice you open just going near them
