Elmhurst Woman Believes Someone Tried to Break Into Her Home

The woman heard a loud banging sound and later saw dirt by her basement window and bootprints leading away from it, police said.

An Elmhurst woman suspects someone tried to break into her South York Street home early Monday morning, police said.

The woman "believes someone tried to gain access to her basement though a fire escape basement window," police said.

The resident "can narrow down the time frame as she heard a loud, banging sound below her bedroom window during the night," police said. "She did not look outside at that point, but noticed it this morning when she saw a small amount of dirt on the floor of the escape window area and bootprints leading away from the window."
