Elmhurst Police Report Theft of Everything From Jewelry to Cars to Grave Markers

Most of the thefts remain unsolved.

Retail Theft Arrest
Nicole Lynn Waisganis, 28, 604 Academy Court, Schaumberg, was arrested and charged with retail theft after a security officer at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, allegedly saw her remove jewelry worth $143.98 from the store without paying at 12:50 p.m. Sept. 29. She was released on I-bond.

Theft by Deception
Two suspects, a man and a woman between 35 and 40 years old, short-changed the cashier at Buffalo Wild Wings, 149 N. York Road, out of $70 at 9:49 p.m. Sept. 29. Police are examining security video.

Vehicles Stolen
Someone stole a vehicle parked at First and Maple streets between 9 a.m. and 4:57 p.m. Sept. 27. Tire markings appeared in the space, which could indicate the vehicle was dragged out by a tow truck.

Someone removed a 2004 Toyota Camry that was parked on the north side of Park Street just west of Myrtle between 7:17 a.m. and 5:58 p.m. Sept. 26.

Theft
An employee of Shell gas station, 654 W. North Ave., told police he was leaving work at noon Sept. 23 with $4,567 to deposit at the bank. He placed the sack of money on the center console. Before leaving the lot, he noticed a broken bottle behind his vehicle. He exited the car and removed the glass, and when he got back into the vehicle, the money was gone. He said he did not see anyone enter the vehicle or remove the money.

Someone pumped $53.04 in gas at Gas Stop, 575 S. York Road, at 3:45 p.m. Sept. 23 and drove off without paying. Police are reviewing surveillance video.

Someone gained access to the Hotmail account of a resident on the 100 block of East Crescent between July 20 and Aug. 15 and used his personal information to open a Bill Me Later account, leading to $568.86 worth of unauthorized charges.

A man was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital for evaluation following an incident at 120 S. Palmer Drive at 10:29 p.m. Sept. 24. The subject, who was walking on Palmer Drive, seemed disoriented and reportedly told police he had not taken his medication for a few days. He was carrying two bags, and said he had stolen them out of a blue SUV near some railroad tracks, but he did not remember what town. The bags contained a Garmin GPS, loose change and toiletries. Police said the suspect didn't know the date, time or where he was.

Someone removed a grave marker from Elm Lawn Cemetery sometime before May 30. The victim reported the theft to cemetery personnel at the time and reported it to Elmhurst police Sept. 26. The marker has a granite base and a bronze plaque and is valued at $1,300.

Someone removed the handicap placard from the rear-view mirror of a vehicle parked at Jewel, 153 E. Schiller, while the victim shopped between 3 and 4 p.m. Sept. 24. The vehicle was unlocked and the windows open.

Someone removed 16 catalytic converters from vehicles parked at Elite Car Outlet, 178 N. Route 83. The theft was reported at 12:04 a.m. Sept. 24.

Commercial Burglary
Someone entered Med Speed, 650 W. Grand Ave. Suite 306 between 11:23 p.m. Sept. 24 and 6:49 a.m. Sept. 25 and removed a money bag containing an undetermined amount of cash. Employees arrived at work and noticed a wooden wedge in the door and items out of place inside. Surveillance video shows a single offender entering the building.

Someone entered the International Contractors property, 977 S. Route 83, by cutting a pad lock on the south gate between 1 p.m. Sept. 25 and 7 a.m. Sept. 26. Fifteen storage containers/semi trailers were entered by their rear doors. Some of the containers had been locked with padlocks, but the offender was able to open the locking mechanisms with an unknown tool. Complainants will provide police with a list of the property that was stolen.
