Elmhurst Police Report Theft Incidents Between Oct. 17-26

Accounts of identity theft appear regularly.

Theft Arrests

John Goggin, 30, 649 Childe St., Wheaton, was arrested for retail theft at 2:04 p.m. Oct. 18. Goggin reportedly was seen riding his bicycle away from the parking lot near Sears Essentials, 265 S. Route 83, then pulling DVD cases out of his jacket and putting them in a plastic grocery bag. Officers stopped him in the Kopper Kitchen parking lot, 601 W. St. Charles Road, at which time he allegedly attempted to flee. He was apprehended with video games and DVDs valued at $92.94. He was released on bond.

Audrey Elizabeth Lane, 21, 1816 Bonita Lane, Mt. Prospect, and Adam J. Briggs, 21, 1319 E. Mayfair, Arlington Heights, were arrested and charged under state charges for retail theft after they were seen taking cosmetics, toiletries and clothing from Sears Essentials, 265 S. Route 83, at 4:52 p.m. Oct. 25.Value of the stolen items is $76.51. Both were released on bond.

Someone punched out the rear door lock of a Chevy van parked on the 400 block of South Fair between 10 a.m. and noon Oct. 18 and removed between $3,000 and $5,000 worth of power tools, including saws, drills and nail guns.

Someone took an iPod Nano from a vehicle parked at 493 N. Oaklawn Ave. between 4 and 4:30 p.m. Oct. 17. There was no sign of forced entry. Loss is estimated at $150.

Someone took a $350 white Nokia Neuron cell phone and $20 from an unlocked Ford F150 parked on a driveway on the 600 block of North Willow between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. Oct. 17.

Someone entered a detached garage on the 300 block of Winthrop through a service door between 11:59 p.m. Oct. 19 and 8:30 p.m. Oct. 20. Nothing was disturbed inside, but a hammer not belonging to the resident was found inside, and the wooden service door and frame were damaged. Damage is estimated at $100.

Someone removed a $500 black Samsung Vibrant cell phone from a bench outside the Smoothie Factory, 116 S. York, at 11 a.m. Oct. 22.

Someone removed a black leather Coach purse from an unlocked vehicle parked on the 400 block of Walnut between 1:30 and 4:30 p.m. Oct. 22. The purse contained a wallet, about $100 in cash, insurance cards and credit cards.

Someone stole about 70 gallons of diesel fuel from two trucks parked at the rear of a home on the 400 block of West Fullerton between 4 p.m. Oct. 20 and 7 a.m. Oct. 21. Loss is estimated at $190.

Someone removed six Republican candidate signs from the front yard of a home on the 300 block of Utley between 12:01 p.m. Oct. 22 and 7 a.m. Oct. 24.

Someone removed a locked, gray Schwinn Ranger mountain bike worth $150 from the bike rack at Bryan Middle School, 111 W. Butterfield Road, between 8:15 a.m. Oct. 21 and 8:10 a.m. Oct. 22.

Someone stole a $500 Garmin Nuvee GPS from a vehicle parked on the 700 block of North Church Street between 10:30 a.m. and noon Oct. 25.

Someone took four Republican candidate signs from the front of a home on the 400 block of Utley Road between 8 p.m. Oct. 22 and 8 a.m. Oct. 25.

Someone took a Garmin GPS worth $200, a voice recorder and a power cord from a vehicle parked at a lot on the 700 block of North Oaklawn Avenue between 9 and 10:20 a.m. Oct. 25. The passenger side window had been shattered.

Identity Theft

Someone used the name and address of a resident on the 100 block of North Haven to open a Comcast account. The victim learned of this after receiving a collection notice saying she owes $2,178.11. She reported the incident at 4:10 p.m. Oct. 19. She told police she has been a Comcast customer for eight years and is up to date on her account. It is unknown how the offender gained her information, and the victim doesn't know anyone at the Chicago address listed on the account.

Someone attempted to open a Kohls charge card using the financial information of a victim on the 500 block of North Emroy. The victim received a call from Kohl's fraud department, saying the offender attempted to purchase numerous gift cards with the newly established credit, and the store clerk in Madison, Wisc., discovered the identification did not match the card.

A resident on the 400 block of Alexander reported at noon Oct. 22 that someone used her social security number to open a cell phone account with T-mobile.

Someone opened a Comcast account under the social security number of a resident on the 100 block of York Street, it was reported at 1:12 p.m. Oct. 5. The victim told police he recently moved and tried to open a Comcast account. He was told of an outstanding bill in the amount of $232.58. He told police he had been a previous customer since 2005 and did not have an outstanding bill. It was learned that the offender opened an account under the victim's social security number back in 2008.

Someone made five fraudulent charges on the credit card of a victim on the 200 block of North Addison Street between Sept. 19 and Oct. 26. The unknown offender also attempted to open several other credit cards using the victim's information.
