Garbage Dumped on Resident's Deck, and Theft of Cash, Bikes and an iPod Reported

Incidents from the Elmhurst police blotter dated Feb. 10-15.

Theft

Someone took a blue bag with "Villa Park Bank" printed on it from an unlocked vehicle parked at the Schiller parking deck, 116 Schiller, between 12:15 and 12:30 p.m. Feb. 10. The bag contained $76.

Someone stole an unlocked 26-inch Schwinn Continental 10-speed men's bicycle from the train station, 128 W. First St., between 8 p.m. Feb. 9 and 1 p.m. Feb. 10.

A resident returning from a trip to Europe in January said she was approached by a subject at the airport who asked her to participate in a survey to win free air travel. She provided her personal information, including her Social Security number. On Feb. 4 she received a mailing from Chase Bank verifying her information for a credit card application.

Someone opened a Chase/Toys R Us Mastercard using the personal information of a resident of the 200 block of East Grantley to purchase $913 worth of items. A Kohl's credit card also was opened in her name, and the offender purchase $1,000 worth of gift cards at an unknown Kohl's location. The cards were opened using the victim's first name and her son's father's last name, according to the police report, which was filed at 10:23 a.m. Feb. 11.

A $300 iPod was stolen from the dance room at Elmhurst College, 190 S. Prospect Ave., between 8:25 and 8:30 p.m. Feb. 14.

An unlocked black Schwinn Cruiser was taken from outside a business on the 100 block of East Butterfield. The theft was reported at 6:43 p.m. Feb. 16.

Suspicious Circumstances

A resident of Birch Tree Court told police there has been suspicious activity around her home between Feb. 9 and 15. On Feb. 11, she thought she heard someone trying to open her front door. On Feb. 15, someone rang the doorbell in the middle of the night and when she answered the door, no one was there. She also said two bags full of garbage were dumped on her rear deck. She suspects her son is responsible because he thinks she turned him in to the IRS for not paying his taxes. The son says he has not been to Elmhurst for months.

Someone scratched a vehicle causing $6,000 in damage while it was parked on the 100 block of East Brush Hill Road between 6 p.m. Feb. 14 and 6:30 a.m. Feb. 15.

Someone splashed yellow paint on the front door of a home on the 500 block of South Poplar. The report was made at 5:24 p.m. Feb. 16.
