Elmhurst Police Report Burglary, Theft

Woman with orange hair attempts to steal $5,500, and counterfeit $20 turns up at Portillo's.

Residential Burglary

Police discovered at 12:32 p.m. April 27 that someone had broken into a home on the 600 block of West Crockett. The rear sliding glass door had been pried open, and a total of $3,720 in items were taken.

Someone reportedly attempted to break into a home on St. Regis Court at 1:19 a.m. April 28. The resident told police that she was awakened by the sound of her wind chimes, which hang on the door knob, hitting against the door. She went downstairs to check the front door and noticed the door knob was loose and their was a cut in the screen door. Police didn’t find any footprints or fingerprints. Damage is estimated at $50.

Theft Arrest

Laura Anguiano, 33, 25 W. 57th St., Westmont, was arrested and charged with retail theft for taking $87 in clothing from Kohl’s, 303 S. Route 83, at 2:40 p.m. April 23. She was released on I-bond.

Theft

The owner of a home on the 500 block of North Walnut Street reported that a refrigerator valued at $1,000 was missing from the property she owns and was renting. In the report, filed at 10:29 a.m. April 22, the owner said that the double-door, stainless steel refrigerator was missing from the property after the tenants moved out. In its place was a small white refrigerator. The tenants, who were evicted from the house for not paying rent, said the stainless steel refrigerator broke, so they gave it to scavengers and replaced it with the smaller one. They denied taking the refrigerator.

Someone took two metal swings from the back yard of a home on the 100 block of South Oakland Grove between 3:40 p.m. April 17 and 3 p.m. April 23. Loss is estimated at $100.

Someone fraudulently used a victim’s Visa debit card five times in Elmhurst on April 23. Four charges were at the Powermart, 572 W. Lake St., in the amount of $52.91 each time, and one charge was at the BP station, 1003 N. York Road, for $54.97.

An iPod valued at $280 was stolen from the mens locker room at the Elmhurst YMCA, 211 W. First St., between 7:30 and 10 p.m. April 25. The victim told police he left the locker unlocked while he played basketball. When he returned, the iPod was gone, but the rubber protective case and the ear phones were still there.

Employees at Garland Converting, 945 Larch Ave. reported someone fraudulently cashed five checks totaling $3,649.02 between April 8 and 9.

Counterfeit $20

Staff at Portillo’s, 155 S. Route 53, reported at 7:51 p.m. April 21 that a counterfeit $20 bill was found in one of the cash registers.

Identity Theft

A woman attempted to impersonate a customer of Wells Fargo Bank, 333 S. Route 83, at 3:19 p.m. April 25. The woman, who was in her 50s with medium-length orange-red hair and wearing all black clothing, attempted to withdraw $5,500 from another woman’s account. The transaction was denied and the suspect left and went into Kohl’s. Police did not locate her.

Suspicious Person

Someone went to a home on the 700 block of North Kenilworth at 5:56 p.m. April 25 and told the homeowner he had a flat tire and needed to borrow $37. He said he lived on the block and his mother works at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital. The woman was alarmed, told him no and shut the door.
