Elmhurst Police Report Bogus Checks Used to Purchase Cadillac, Acura

Fraud, forgery and other various types of theft reported.

Forgery

Brianca Goodson, 23, 1924 Broadway St. Apt. 3B, Blue Island, was arrested and charged with felony forgery after she allegedly attempted to purchase a 2008 Cadillac Escalade with a fraudulent cashier's check at Lucky Motors, 817 Church Road, at 7 p.m. July 5, police said. She was taken to DuPage County Jail.

An unnamed suspect opened a business account at Wells Fargo Bank and deposited fraudulent checks totaling $94,908.80. The suspect returned to the bank July 11 and attempted to withdraw the money. Charges were pending at the time of the police report.

Fraud

A resident of the 300 block of Ridge told police he was contacted on Facebook by someone pretending to be an old friend. The "friend" asked him if he would like to make $1,500 by lending out his bank account number to be used for "cracking cards." The victim agreed, and stated that on July 8, a vehicle pulled into his driveway and he gave the occupants his debit card. The victim was later contacted by the actual Facebook friend, who said her account had been hacked. The victim discovered that $100 was missing from his debit account. The suspects are described as black men in their 20s. The driver was about 6 feet tall with a tattoo of a cross on his right arm, wearing plaid shorts, Jordan shoes and a green and white Hornet's hat. The passenger also had tattoos and was wearing a red shirt and shorts.

A woman purchased a 2007 Green Acura MDX with a fraudulent cashiers check from Woodforest National Bank in the amount of $17,845.30 at 9 p.m. July 3.

Someone visited Howard Pontiac, 634 W. Grand Ave., in January and offered to place advertisements for the business on the shopping carts at Mariano's. The business paid the subject $900 but did not receive any advertising. The incident was reported on July 16.

Attempted Burglary

The resident of a home on the 300 block of East Oneida reported damage to a door on the west side of the residence. They told police the damage occurred between 3:30 p.m. July 15 and 10:15 a.m. July 16, and that someone had tried to break into the home two weeks prior and had damaged the same door.

Theft Arrests

Treyvon Love, 19, 1601 Oakton St., Elk Grove Village, was arrested and charged with theft after he was found riding a bicycle through a shopping plaza on the 700 block of North York at 5:35 a.m. July 5. Police said the bike had been stolen from a yard. He was released on bond and the bike returned to its owner.

Ana Barcenas, 21, 444 S. Ardmore, Addison, was arrested and charged with retail theft after police said she took a necklace worth $18 from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 9:21 p.m. July 5. She was released on bond.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested and cited with retail theft at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 1:14 p.m. July 18. He allegedly ran from a security officer after taking a T-shirt from a package, wearing it and exiting the store without paying. He was released to his father.

Identity Theft

Someone fraudulently used the name and social security number of a resident of the 400 block of East Harrison Street to file a federal tax return. The incident was reported July 15.

Theft

A gray Diamondback Kalahari bicycle worth $250 was taken from a bike rack on the 100 block of West First Street between 7:15 and 10:50 p.m. July 5. The bike was locked with a cable lock, police said.

A maroon men's Diamondback Hybrid bicycle worth $450 was taken from a bike rack at York and Park between 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. July 6. The bike was locked.

An officer on foot patrol was stopped by a citizen who said suspects in an older white van were attempting to steal bicycles in the area of Park and York streets at 7:50 p.m. July 6. The suspects were not located.

The passenger front window of a vehicle was broken and the vehicle rummaged through while it was parked at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, between 7:55 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. July 10. Nothing appeared to be missing, but damage to the window was $300.

Someone took two bags of merchandise from Jewel, 944 S. York Road, at 8:15 p.m. July 10. The suspect got into a blue Honda and fled south on York.

Several teenagers were seen loading a pink Mongoose bicycle into the trunk of a red, four-door compact car, possibly a Chevrolet Cavalier, on the 300 block of West Vallette at 11:20 a.m. July 11. They fled when the owner began screaming at them. Loss is estimated at $80.

A checkbook was stolen from a vehicle parked at an Oak Brook church parking lot on July 10, and the victim was notified by his bank on July 11 that someone attempted to cash two checks using his name. The bank turned him away, but a credit card was used at a Home Depot store before he was able to cancel the card. Photos of the suspect were obtained from the bank. He is described as a white man, 40 to 50 years old, clean shaven with brown hair and a medium build.

A silver and diamond ring was stolen from a woman who died. Family members told police they believe the ring was stolen sometime between the time they left the body at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital at 2:30 a.m. July 1, and when it was transported to Gibbons Funeral Home at noon July 3.

A wallet was stolen from a breakfast table in the lobby of a business on the 400 block of West Lake Street at 10 a.m. July 11. The victim returned at 4:30 p.m. that day and retrieved the wallet at the front desk, but $300 was missing.

An unlocked Diamondback BMX style bike was taken from the bike rack near Southtown Express at 3:45 p.m. July 12. Loss is estimated at $200.

Softball equipment worth $400 was taken from a vehicle parked at Spring Hill Suites, 410 W. Lake St., between 11 p.m. July 12 and 7:50 a.m. July 13. The window of the vehicle was smashed. While investigating the theft, police noticed another vehicle's window was smashed out. Police located the victim and discovered her portable DVD player had been stolen.

Audio-visual equipment and a purse, among other items, were stolen from a vehicle parked at Courtyard by Marriott, 370 N. Route 83, sometime overnight July 12 to 13.

A wallet was taken from an unlocked vehicle parked at West Suburban Church, 825 Van Auken, between 10 and 11:30 a.m. The wallet contained a drivers license and Chase Bank debit card. The wallet was returned later in the day by an unknown elderly couple who found it on the street a couple of blocks away, and nothing was missing, police said.

A black iPhone 4 and a folding knife were taken from an unlocked locker at the YMCA, 211 W. First St., between 6 and 8:30 p.m. July 18.
