Elmhurst Police Report Attempted Burglary, Theft, Suspicious Circumstances

Manager of Fitz's mentioned someone had tampered with the ATM while police were there investigating another incident.

Attempted Burglary

While doing a follow-up investigation, the manager of Fitz’s Pub, 172 N. Addison St., told police that someone attempted to gain access to the ATM machine inside the bar at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5. Surveillance video showed a man tampering with the machine, which subsequently shut down. No money appeared to be missing.

Retail Theft Arrest

John T. Rexroat, 48, 5905 Ridge Ave., Berkeley, and Robert T. Fraser, 45, of the same address, were arrested and charged with retail theft at Jewel, 944 S. York Road, at 2:51 a.m. Feb. 20. They exited the store and police found several items they had not paid for: two Snickers bars, three Hersey bars, one container of Dove Ice cream and six packs of cigarettes. Fraser also was found to have a valid warrant out of Oak Brook for shoplifting. He was released to Oak Brook police.

Two boys from Wheaton, ages 14 and 15, were arrested and charged with retail theft at Sears, 265 S. Route 83, at 3:45 p.m. Feb. 20. Store security officers saw them remove the packaging from numerous electronic items and conceal them in their clothing. They were released on bond to their mother.

Theft

A resident of the 500 block of West Belden told police that she ordered a cell phone online, and when she received the package, it appeared to have been tampered with. She opened it up, and the manufacturer’s box inside was ripped open and the phone was missing. The phone was a $200 Motorola Defy touch screen. The victim reported the incident at noon on Feb. 16.

Someone removed an Apple i-pod from a locker at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, between 7:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Feb. 14. The victim reported a Canon Power Shot camera also was taken from the same locker about a week prior.

Suspicious Circumstances

An employee of Chicago Masonry, 841 N. Addison St., reported that a new employee, a 24-year-old Des Plaines woman, started her first day of employment and was given uniforms, keys and the pass code to the alarm. She was scheduled to return to work on Feb. 17, but she failed to show up. Police were asked to assist in retrieving the items she had in her possession, and a service officer attempted to contact her at her home with no luck. Her wellbeing is unknown.
