Elmhurst Police Officer Honored by MADD

Officer Matthew McCollum led the department in DUI arrests in 2011.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving on Sept. 22 recognized Officer Matthew McCollum of the Elmhurst Police Department for his efforts in reducing alcohol abuse in Elmhurst.

Each year, MADD recognizes individuals in Illinois who make exemplary efforts to eliminate drunk driving, provide support for victims of DUI and help prevent underage drinking.

Elmhurst Police Department has a long history of aggressive DUI enforcement. In 2011, the Elmhurst Police Department made 367 DUI arrests which was the sixth highest in the state. McCollum was the leading officer in Elmhurst with 73 DUI arrests.

He is also a police academy instructor where he trains police recruits in the administration of DUI field sobriety tests.

McCollum believes education is a crucial component in stopping underage drinking. As a DARE officer, he is able to educate youth on the hazards and consequences of underage drinking. He also provides victims of DUI crashes with information regarding the criminal case and will assist victims with obtaining assistance from other agencies.

I agree with both Stewart and Sandy. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated officer patrolling Elmhurst, but my wife works in DuPage DUI Court at the Wheaton Courthouse and has seen how one 'mistake' has ruined otherwise law abiding citizen's lives. Please don't drink and drive.

I am happy that people who are drinking and driving, are being punished for there crimes, and hopefully saving some lives in the process. Although, I do not respect that the fact that there is a "REAL RACKET" going on with this. He should not be glorified for having the most arrests, that is his job and we pay him well for it! DuPage County is one of the most corrupt places in the world. Stewart, you are absolutely right! I just don't think that child molesters, sexual predators, kiddie porn sicko's, etc...(the scum of the earth), get a more leniant sentence than someone that gets their forst DUI. THAT IS A SHAME!!! DuPage you disgust me when it comes to that. I was caught driving on a suspended license (100% guilty). Someone in the holding cell with me was in there for sexual assault, I got a $30,000 bond $3,000 to get out. This sexual predator was given a $5,000 dollar bond or $500 to get out. C'MON MAN, they need to stop with the greed and raping people for traffic tickets (except DUI) and start prosecuting and punishing some of the other sick things that go on all around us far more! Sorry to be all over the place. I just think it is wrong to have a racket for traffic going on when there are bigger fish to fry.
