Elmhurst Police Follow Suspected Jewelry Thieves from Elmhurst to Niles

Police discussions with suspects may have thwarted a theft in City Centre.

Elmhurst police were instrumental in helping identify several men who reportedly stole a diamond engagement ring from a jewelry store in Niles.

At 1:24 p.m. Jan. 3, police received a report that several men were acting suspicious and were in and out of jewelry stores in downtown Elmhurst, including Cottage Hill Diamonds at 125 N. York. An Elmhurst officer spoke to the men, who said they were shopping for gifts for their wives, police said.

The suspects then got into a black Dodge Charger that had two additional suspects inside, and they left the area. The responding officer followed the suspects into Niles and contacted the Niles police.

Elmhurst officers later found out from Niles police that the suspects had been viewed on security camera at a jewelry store in Niles stealing a diamond engagement ring from a jewelry case without anyone noticing.
