Elmhurst Home Burglarized While Residents Slept

Neighbor's vehicle, which was parked inside a garage, also was burglarized.

Residents of a home on the 400 block of North Maple Avenue told police that when they woke up at 5 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17, they discovered they had been burglarized some time during the previous night. They had gone to bed at about 11 p.m. Thursday.

The first thing they noticed when they woke up was a bottle of hot sauce that had been on the kitchen table was spilled on the floor, police said. The resident then noticed that his wallet and phone, and his wife's purse and iPad were all missing from the kitchen counter.

The residents said it was possible they had left their sliding glass door unlocked overnight. Police discovered no pry marks or signs of forced entry.

During the investigation, police discovered someone had broken into the vehicle of a neighbor on the same block of North Maple between 7:30 p.m. Jan. 16 and 7:30 a.m. Jan. 17. Taken was a Coach wristlet containing a drivers license, credit cards and $6 cash. The vehicle was parked inside the residents' unlocked garage.

This is a great reminder to make sure all your house, garage, and car doors and windows are locked. This person would probably have moved on to the next house until they found one with easy entry. Not only does keeping our doors and windows locked make it harder for the criminal, it makes it more likely for someone to notice the suspicious activity.

If you leave your doors/windows unlocked at night you deserve to get some stuff stolen, wake up!

Could be an inside job.

We keep all our doors locked even during the day. Never, never, never do I walk into the house, close a door behind me and leave it unlocked. The minute I step into the house, I turn around and lock the door. "Elementary, my dear Watson."
