Garage on Clinton Burglarized, and Babysitter Suspected of Stealing $15,000 to $20,000 from Home

Thieves take iPhone, GPS, tools, liquor, street sign, and items from front porches.

Residential Burglary

A resident of the 200 block of Clinton told police that a suspect around 16 to 18 years old wearing a black stocking cap entered his garage at 4:05 p.m. March 25 and took his 20-inch boys Raleigh bicycle and fled the scene in a green Ford Taurus. While speaking to the victim, police saw the vehicle at Maison and Third streets and tried to catch up to it, but the offender got away. The car was last seen headed eastbound at Richard Avenue.

A resident of the 300 block of South Kenmore Avenue told police a babysitter had been stealing jewelry and money worth between $15,000 and $20,000 from the home over the past year. The suspect was confronted and returned some of the items, but others are still missing. The report was filed on March 19.

UPS delivered a wooden bamboo kitchen cart to a home on the 200 block of Elmhurst Avenue between 2 and 4:20 p.m. March 15, but when the resident found the box, it was empty except for the packaging material. Loss is estimated at $100.

An unknown man attempted to take liquor from Jewel, 944 S. York Road, at 2:37 a.m. March 16. He fled the scene after setting off the security alarm.

Someone entered a locked gym locker at York High School, 355 W. St. Charles Road, between 3:30 and 5 p.m. March 15 and stole an iPhone. The victim had a tracking application on the phone.

Someone jumped out of a car at York and May at 2:45 p.m. March 17 and snapped the York/May street sign off the post, hopped back in the car and sped away, a witness told police. Police did not provide a description of the car.

Someone stole silver servingware from a clear bin on a front porch of a home on the 200 block of East Columbia Avenue between 11:40 a.m. and 2:40 p.m. March 18. The items were on the porch because they were being moved to another location.

Someone removed a bicycle from a garage on the 200 block of North Larch Ave. between 3 p.m. March 17 and 4 p.m. March 18. The service door was unlocked.

Someone entered an unlocked vehicle while it was parked in a driveway on the 200 block of South Berkley Avenue and took change out of a jar between 10 p.m. March 18 and 8:10 a.m. March 19.

Someone removed a GPS unit from an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway on the 400 block of Rex between 7:30 a.m. March 19 and 7:30 a.m. March 20.

Someone entered an unlocked van on the 400 block of South Rex between 11 p.m. March 19 and 7:30 a.m. March 20 and rifled through the glove compartment. Nothing appeared to be missing.

Someone entered an unlocked BMW parked in the driveway of a home on the 500 block of Berkley between 8 p.m. March 19 and 7 a.m. March 20. Items in the vehicle had been rifled through, and the victim found a scratch on the roof and hood that had not been there when she parked.

Two men reportedly took vodka worth $15.99 and brandy worth $20.99 from Jewel, 944 S. York Road, at 7 a.m. March 22. The entered an old white car that was parked in the loading zone and weaved erratically through the parking lot as they fled the scene.

Someone entered a possibly unlocked van parked at Extended Stay America, 550 W. Grand Ave., between 6:30 a.m. March 23 and 7:30 a.m. March 24 and removed two Black & Decker drills, one four-drawer tool chest that contained hand tools and a Metabo roto gun in a bucket. Total loss is estimated at $6,400.

Retail Theft Arrests

Helen Kollar, 43, 318 N. Maple Ave., Wood Dale, was arrested and charged with retail theft after she allegedly was seen taking 10 items from CVS Pharmacy, 110 W. North Ave., at 1:57 p.m. March 16. She was released on I-bond.

Verenice Rosales, 21, 1048 S. York Apt. GC, Bensenville, and Maria Margarita Nunez, 56, of the same address, were arrested and charged with retail theft after a store security officer reportedly saw them taking merchandise from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83. Nunez also was charged with obstructing identification. They were released on bond.

Erika Martinez-Ariza, 32, 650 S. York Apt. 205, Elmhurst, was arrested and charged with retail theft after she allegedly took $41 in merchandise from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 10:29 p.m. March 17. She was released on bond.

Patricia E. Venegas, 22, 2539 S. St. Louis, Chicago, was arrested and charged with retail theft after she was seen by store security removing $61.77 worth of jewelry and clothing from Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, at 1:35 p.m. March 23. She allegedly placed the items into her purse and left the store. She was released on bond.

A boy was taken into custody after he was seen taking a pair of sunglasses worth $25 from the rack at Kohl's, 303 S. Route 83, and leaving the store without paying at 12:38 p.m. March 22. He was released and his case is pending juvenile disposition.

Identity Theft

A resident of the 100 block of Grantley Avenue told police he received documents from the IRS advising him he owed money for income earned between 2008 and 2010 on which he never paid taxes. The IRS said he worked for Panera and CEC Entertainment, where he never actually worked. The report was filed March 16.

Someone attempted to make a purchase with the credit card of an East Crestview resident between March 15 and 16 through Walmart.com. The purchase was denied and the victim canceled her card.

A resident of the 400 block of Avery told police someone made two unauthorized purchases for $1,000 and $9 at Target in Hodgkins. The victim, who made the report at 6:32 p.m. March 17, said her card may have been stolen at the Citgo gas station at 217 E. Butterfield Road.

Someone used the bank account of an Elm Street resident to make charges at the Apple iTunes store for $106.24. The report was made at 5:52 p.m. March 20.
