Standoff With Bensenville Shooter Ends Peacefully Tuesday Afternoon

District 205 officials were notified, but Elmhurst students were not in harm's way, police said.

The Bensenville Police Department notified Elmhurst police Tuesday that an armed suspect had confined himself inside a home on the 200 block of South Mason Street, about 1 1/2 miles north of Grand Avenue and York Road.

The Daily Herald reported the gunman, 36-year-old Jose Bailon, was alone in the house and fired six or seven rounds at about 10:45 a.m. before barricading himself in an upstairs bedroom.

The DuPage County SWAT team was called to secure the area, and there was increased police presence around Conrad Fischer Elementary School and Churchville Middle School in Elmhurst, police said. Principals of those two schools, as well as York High School, were made aware of the situation.

Four Bensenville schools near the home were locked down for four hours. Police assured District 205 Superintendent David Pruneau that there was no danger to District 205 students.

Police fired tear gas into the home, which caused Bailon to come out. He was taken to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, and charges are pending.
