Your Take: Concealed Carry in Illinois (Poll)

Cast your vote and see what some of your neighbors think of Illinois' becoming the last state in the nation to have legal private concealed carry.

Concealed carry of firearms was legalized Tuesday as the Illinois House and Senate overrode Gov. Pat Quinn's amendatory veto.

We asked our readers: Are you outraged or relieved? Do you think carrying a gun as you go about your day is a way to protect yourself from dangerous people, or is it something that will lead to increased gun violence on the streets?Read some of their responses below, and vote in the poll above:

Jason A. Diehl—“Great idea... unless you are a criminal who prefers your victims to be unarmed.  Law abiding citizens, who take 16 hours of training, pass a background check and pay $150 for a permit are not who the public needs to fear.” – Wheaton Patch Facebook

Ann Swadley—“No way! How stupid and insensitive have we become? Never, ever forget Sandy Hook and Gabby Gifford!” – Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook

Michele Hines—“I think if more of the gang bangers illegally carrying guns realize they no longer have helpless, weaponless victims they might think twice about acting like bad-ass thugs.” – Elmhurst Patch Facebook

Susan Barger Donahue—“It is not about wearing a gun on your person. It is about the bad guys knowing you can. A year from now, you will see that crime rates will have gone down in Illinois. That's a good thing.” – Wheaton Patch Facebook

Kerry Pelz Mansour—“Pretty sure the bad guys don't care what's legal and what's not. Pretty sure the bad guys have already been concealed carrying. Now we'll just have more people wearing their guns. A year from now, you will see that shootings will have gone up in Illinois. That's a bad thing.” – Wheaton Patch Facebook

Rose Perez—“Once I get my training, I plan on carrying. I hope to never need to use it to protect myself, but if I have to, I'm able to.” – Elmhurst Patch Facebook

Sue Stozek Mayeda—“I think it’s a bad idea.” – Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook

Jim Murphy—“Communities where gun ownership is legal and where concealed carry exists experience negligible issues with gun violence… A gun in the hands of a trained and licensed owner will respond faster than any 911 call if your life is in danger from those who would threaten your life and property. Wake up, America.” – Glen Ellyn Patch Facebook

Marc Brash—“I'm terrified of people that are willing to jump through all their hoops to get a permit because usually people that follow the law and get a permit, abuse the privilege and just shoot rounds off at random and are a danger to society.” – Wheaton Patch Facebook

Karen Seymour-Ells—“Statistics show that if you own/carry a gun you are more likely to be shot. That's not a political statement. Just a fact.” – Wheaton Patch Facebook

Aaron Camp—“Glad. It's a pretty weak conceal carry bill in the sense that it's overly restrictive, but we're moving towards a constitutional approach to self-protection.” – Wheaton Patch Facebook
