Services Scheduled for Three Who Left Their Mark in Elmhurst

Helen Grace Gum Westlake, Lucia Antoinette Morris and Ronald Kies all had strong ties to the community.

Funeral and memorial services are scheduled for a former York High School teacher from Wheaton, a 1954 York High School graduate who grew up in Elmhurst, and a long-time Elmhurst resident who served faithfully with Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Helen Grace Gum Westlake, 84, of Wheaton, died Sept. 9. She served from 1972 to 1989 as chairman of the home economics department of York High School in Elmhurst. She also wrote five nationally acclaimed text books on family living and child development, according to an obituary in the Chicago Tribune. A memorial service will be held Nov. 11 at the Naperville campus of Northern Illinois University.

Lucia Antoinette Morris, 76, of Mount Horeb, Wisc., died Sept. 8. She grew up in Elmhurst, graduated from York High School in 1954, and lived for many years in Geneva and Sycamore, according to an obituary in the DeKalb Daily Chronicle. Visitation will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 101 S. Sixth Ave.,  St. Charles.

Ronald Harold Kies, 80, a resident of Elmhurst since 1969, has passed away. He was active with PADS and Prison Fellowship Ministry, and was a Navy Veteran serving under the United Nations flag during the Korean War, according to an obituary in the Chicago Tribune. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Ahlgrim Funeral Home, 567 S. Spring Road. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at Epiphany Evangelical Lutheran Church, 314 W. Vallette St., Elmhurst.
