Death Notices: Estelle Bowen, Darline Petersen, Eric Anderson, Robert Nelson, Laura Jane Cerling

A number of people with deep connections to Elmhurst, including a former Elmhurst alderman, have recently passed away.

Estelle Elizabeth "Peachie" Bowen

Estelle Elizabeth "Peachie" Bowen, 87, died Tuesday morning, April 30, in Fruitport, Mich. She was a life-long resident of Elmhurst prior to moving to the Muskegon, Mich., area three years ago.

Peachie was a member of Mary Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Elmhurst. She belonged to various prayer groups, and an investment club with her network of girlfriends. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Joseph, and her four children, 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Mary Queen of Heaven, 426 N. West Ave.

Darline Petersen

Darline L. Petersen, 69, of Elmhurst, died March 21 after an extended hospital stay.

Mrs. Peterson held degrees from University of Wisconsin and the John Marshall Law School. After practicing law for nearly 20 years, she decided to follow her favorite pastime, cooking, and until her retirement worked as a chef, food service manager and teacher of restaurant and hotel law.

She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Eugene Parvin. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Unitarian Church of Hinsdale, 17 W. Maple St. Interment is private.

Eric Anderson

J. Eric Anderson, 91, of Stockton, died peacefully with his family and friends at his side on Tuesday, April 23. He is a World War II Army veteran, having served in Army Airways Communication System in the China-Burma-India Theater from 1942 until 1946.

Mr. Anderson and his wife of 67 years, Lee, raised their family in Elmhurst before moving his architecture business to Stockton in 1975. Since his retirement in 1990, he focused his talents on art full time. His work has been shown in a number of art museums, including the Elmhurst Art Museum, and his paintings are in private and corporate collections nationwide.

He is survived by his wife, three sons, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at the Stockton Unitarian Universalist Church, 219 N. Pearl St., Stockton, Ill.

Robert R. Nelson

Robert R. Nelson, 82, of Elmhurst, died Friday, April 26. He was a retired U.S. Air Force captain, a life member of the DuPage County Bar Association and a life member of the Elmhurst Masonic Lodge 941 AF&A, Medinah Temple, Scottish Rite, DuPage Shrine Club. Nelson also was a former Elmhurst 7th Ward alderman and a member of Elmhurst Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doreen (nee Soukup), his two children and three grandchildren.

A memorial celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 5, at Elmhurst Presbyterian Church, 367 Spring Road.

Laura Jane Cerling

Laura Jane (Eberhardt) Cerling, 91, died on Sunday, April 28. She grew up in Elmhurst, where she met her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Cerling. They raised their family in Itasca, where they helped found the Itasca Evangelical Free Church, then moved to Iowa, and finally to Evansville, Ind., to be near their son.

She is survived by her husband, her six children, 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5, followed by a service of celebration at 3 p.m. at Olivet Presbyterian Church, 5600 Oak Hill Road, Evansville.
