Rough Homecoming for Elmhurst College Football as They Lose 24-12 to the Titans

Homecoming was not so sweet for Elmhurst College football.

I drove down to Elmhurst College the morning of Oct. 15. Students were tailgating in the parking lot. A particular fraternity, Lamba Chi Alpha, had been roasting a pig since 3 a.m.; I got a chance to taste the fraternity's cooking, and it was excellent.

Tailgating was a lot of fun. It reminded me of my past LSU and UCLA football games; it was a great atmosphere with the Elmhurst students.

It was windy as the Bluejays took the field against Illinois Wesleyan University that day. The alumni were having a beer or two in the tents by the football field as they enjoyed homecoming day.

The Titans were undefeated, coming in at 5-0, and Elmhurst was coming off a loss to Wheaton College. The game started out with a bang as Elmhurst marched down the field, but that ended in a stalled drive. They picked up about three first downs but had to punt the ball.

The Titans got the ball, and a few plays ended in a deep route pass over the middle for a touchdown, with Rob Gallik finding Joey Driver for a 58-yard score.

Elmhurst College marched down the field, but stalled and had to settle for a 40-yard field goal by Trevor Spaulding.

The Titans responded with Gallik, a first-year player, scooting into the end zone on a 3-yard run.

Elmhurst struck back as Rodney Payton hauled in a 14-yard touchdown pass from Joe Furco to make the score 14-9.

After a halftime break, Elmhurst got the ball again but had to settle for a 32-yard field goal by Spaulding.

The Titans then scored on a 2-yard pass from Galik to Tate Musselman.  Tony Angelos kicked in a 43-yard field goal for the Titans, and the game ended 24-12.

Elmhurst is home at 1 p.m. today (Saturday), Oct. 22, against Millikin University, which has the same record as the Bluejays. Perhaps we'll see the Elmhurst football team explode off their last two losses.

If you know head coach Tim Lester, he's gonna throw the whole play book at the Millikin Team. I would say it's going to be a high scoring game for Elmhurst, and they'll probably take out their frustrations on Millikin. Expect Scottie Williams to have a big game, and Spaulding will get a full day's work in, too.
