Community Corner

The Great Donation Day

The Great Donation Day is a community effort designed to reuse and recycle unwanted items. Reusable items will be donated to help organizations in need. Unusable items will be recycled or repurposed. And all items will be kept from ending up in landfills.

On June 3, the entire Elmhurst community is invited to Berens Park, east parking lot off of Walnut Street, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Items collected at Berens include: gently worn shoes, cell phones, pop tabs, batteries, eye glasses, ink cartridges, books, musical instruments and school supplies. Reusable items will be donated to charitable organizations such as Share Your Soles and Souls for Africa (shoes), Lions Club (eye glasses) and Ronald McDonald House Charities (pop tabs). Other items, such as ink cartridges and batteries, will be recycled.

Additionally, Cool Cities has contracted with Unitec Recycling to collect and recycle computers and electronics during The Great Donation Day. Items accepted include: computers, copy machines, DVD players, fax machines, monitors, phones, TVs, VCRs, video game systems and small appliances (one person must be able to carry item unassisted). Free document shredding also will be provided by ShredX. For acceptable items and restrictions, visit elmhurstcoolcities.org.
