The Mary K Steffens foundation was established three years ago in memory of Mary, a dedicated community volunteer focused on the fight against cancer and passionate about the Relay for Life. The mission of the foundation is to continue Mary's legacy of volunteerism, love for young people, service and her fight against cancer. Mary battled breast cancer for 13 years before she passed away in August 2008. To honor Mary’s courage, optimism, and will to fight, this foundation has been established so that Mary can continue to inspire young people to focus on finding a cure.

The Mary K Steffens Foundation provides college scholarships to Elmhurst high school seniors who show outstanding academics and volunteerism in support of the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life.  To date The Foundation has awarded eight Elmhurst High School Seniors College Scholarships. The foundation  also support the Survivor/Caregiver Tent at the Elmhurst Relay.
