Pi Betal Phi joins with Barnes & Noble to celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday and raise literacy awareness

Community members are invited to
celebrate Dr. Seuss’ Birthday at Barnes & Noble in Oak Brook and Barnes
& Noble at Webster Place in Chicago.

The Chicago West Suburban, Glen Ellyn – Wheaton, and Windy City Alumnae

Clubs of Pi Beta Phi have joined with Barnes & Noble on this special
occasion to promote literacy.  Kids of all ages attending the event are invited to color book plates, play games, participate
in a speed read, decorate cupcakes at the Barnes & Noble Café and visit
with the Cat in the Hat!!

“We are thrilled to host this event with Barnes & Noble,” said Lesa Moskowitz, Chicago Area Council representative.  “We know this Book Fair Birthday Party
celebration will be a huge success, and we look forward to the support of the
Chicagoland community.”  Proceeds from
the event will be donate to The Literacy Fund at Pi Beta Phi Foundation to
support Read>Lead>Achieve reading initiatives in our communities. Every year, Pi Beta Phi sponsors a Fraternity-wide event in order to achieve maximum impact on reading awareness and fundraising. Pi Beta Phi will celebrate Fraternity Day of Service in an effort to advance literacy on or around March 2 in honor of Dr. Seuss’  birthday. Fraternity Day of Service is a Read > Lead > Achieve initiative to inspire  a lifelong love of reading that can unlock true potential.

The Fraternity’s commitment to literacy
dates back 100 years to the founding of a settlement school in Gatlinburg,
Tennessee. Pi Phi was solely responsible for all education in Gatlinburg from
1912–1969. Now Pi Beta Phi members support literacy in their communities
through Read > Lead > Achieve reading initiatives such as the Fraternity
Day of Service, Champions are Readers® (CAR) program, Arrow in the
Arctic and partnership with First Book®.

Over the past several years, Pi Phis have donated $1
million to literacy causes and given one million books to children in need. Now, the goal is to impact one million lives through Read > Lead > Achieve by the time Pi Beta Phi celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2017, building on its legacy of literacy. Because Pi Beta Phi values philanthropic service to others so highly, we hope to engage 100,000 volunteers on this journey toward impacting one million lives.
