She faces many obstacles every day, including language barriers. In just two hours a week, you can help lift that barrier. Laura was referred to Literacy DuPage through another human services agency because she desires to improve her English skills to achieve independence, help her children in school and speak to doctors.

By sharing your language skills to help her learn to read, write, speak, and understand English better, you can help open doors and provide a better future for Laura and her family.

Literacy DuPage provides accessible and customized one-to-one English language tutoring to adults with low-level literacy skills who have difficulty accessing classroom instruction due to transportation obstacles, work schedules, or lack of childcare.

“Tutoring is at a time and place convenient for both the tutor and the adult learner,” explains Paula Sellergren, a board member of Literacy DuPage.

Tutors may be employed full-time, be retirees, or homemakers. No experience, teaching background or second language is required, just a willingness to help a neighbor. Tutors will receive a comprehensive training in a series of six workshops preparing them for one-to-one tutoring. Once matched with an adult learner, Literacy DuPage staff will provide continued support.

The need for volunteers is ongoing, with more than 175 adults currently waiting for a tutor. You can help end the wait and make a difference in Laura’s life and others who are waiting.
