 First
United Methodist Church of Elmhurst is located at 232 S. York Road in Elmhurst
(corner of Church Street and York Road).
Worship services are held at 8:10 a.m. and 10:25 a.m.  For more information, visit www.umcelmhurst.org or call the church office at 630-834-2440.First
United Methodist Church of Elmhurst invites the community to join them on Wednesday, March 5 for an Ash Wednesday
worship service at 7:00 p.m.  The evening
worship service signals the beginning of the Lenten season with the traditional
imposition or marking of ashes.  Adults and children of all faiths are welcome
to receive ashes.

Ash Wednesday begins the
season of Lent, which starts that day and ends with Easter on April 20.  Lent is a 40-day period of repentance and
renewal and a spiritual time for meditation, prayer and penitential
practices.  Observing
Lent prepares Christians to fully absorb the Easter story and its meaning.  Traditional Lenten practices include fasting,
special commitments, penitential practices (self-denial), good deeds, prayer
and reflection, studying scripture and attending worship services.

This
church’s Lenten theme this year, “Where Will Jesus Meet YOU?,” is a question in
response to the Lenten scripture passages, which this year come from the Gospel
of John.  These scriptures will share stories about Jesus encountering
many characters, in many ways, in many places.  This leads us to examine
where we are on our own faith journey.

The community is warmly welcomed to the following
Lenten events:     “What Wondrous Love: Holy Week in Word and Art” will be
offered as a Sunday morning Lenten study beginning on March 9 and concluding on
April 13, Palm Sunday.  The six sessions
will feature video commentaries by noted Biblical scholars, coupled with
masterpiece illustrations by John August Swanson that explore the powerful
story of Holy Week as told in the four gospels.
John August Swanson is a
contemporary American artist who is known for his Biblical imagery that
combines the flat, stylized look of iconography with the bright palette and
strong narrative sense of his background in Latin American folk art. The study
will be offered on Sunday mornings at 9:15 a.m. in the Aldersgate Room on the
main level beginning on March 9 and will be led by Anita Hindsley. Illustrated
participant books will be available.
