Help Preserve 10,000-Year-Old Prairie in Elmhurst

ELMHURST, Ill. – Located on six acres between Spring Road and Salt Creek, Elmhurst’s 10,000-year-old Great Western Prairie is a living time capsule of Illinois in its original condition, when most of the northern two-thirds of the state was covered in prairie.  Now far less than one percent of that original grassland remains, and Elmhurst has a unique opportunity to help preserve and maintain our own section.  On Saturday, July 20th at 9 a.m., volunteers will be meeting at the intersection of Berkley Avenue and the Prairie Path (between Spring Road and Route 83), as they always have on the third Saturday of each month.  However, the Prairie Restoration group is in need of some extra help this time.  To volunteer, please contact Keith Olson at keitholson@usa.net.

The Elmhurst Park District is an Illinois Distinguished Agency dedicated to promoting “lifetime enjoyment” by providing a variety of parks, recreation facilities, and affordable programs in the Elmhurst community.  For more information on the Elmhurst Park District or gift certificates call (630) 993-8900 or visit www.epd.org.
