1946 - Eleanor King Hookham moves to Elmhurst
Artist Eleanor King Hookham (1909-2003) lived in Elmhurst with her husband and three children from 1946 until the time of her death at age 93 in 2003. Upon her arrival in Elmhurst, it was already certain that she would be a strong community advocate for the arts as she was described as “a young artist of considerable talent and even more promise” by the New York World Telegram in 1939. She had 35 solo exhibitions in New York and Paris and also had exhibitions in Florida. Her work mostly consisted of paintings and prints often featuring landscapes or cityscapes, which she made under the named El King. Her daughter Tarrant Clements is also an artist who today works in the Rochester, New York area.
